I doubt it'll hold on THAT well, they're definitely nice cars, but it'll probably hold on like the GSX's of yore. A bit better I'd assume, but close.

I think in stock form, these cars will be very sought after in a few years. As long as you take very good care of your car, you will be able to find a buyer that will be willing to pay more when they see receipt after receipt of before scheduled maintanence, etc.

hay there people.
my evo is a 1998 evo5 and its now worth about $27000NZD which rufly is about $16500USD and the evo 5 there were only 5000 ever made so given quite a few were writen off ralling and the such they aint worth **** on what they cost $75000NZD about $45000USD. so the mass marketed evo 8 will be about a valuable as a paper weight in 2-3 years. good luck

I never planned on selling my Evo, I planned on having a future of modding it up, suiting my wants. I'm not worried about giving someone else a good deal.

I think the EVO will hold up pretty well. Look at the market...there are plenty of people out there that would kill to have an EVO but can't afford the $30k admission price. So they settle on the $20k cars. So in a few years, which would you take at $20k price range: used EVO (well maintained, 30-50k miles), SRT4, Mazdaspeed protoge, Focus SVT, RSX-S...etc. Well the EVO would still bring a lot to the table, having AWD, 271 hp, mod friendly engine, and all the cool stuff like: recaro seats, momo steering wheel, quick ratio steering, rims, fat tires, racing springs...that most of the new cars listed above don't have.

And then there's the feel of driving an EVO. I don't know of any car that inspires such confidence. This is a very unique car and because of that, it will hold better than the average Mitsu. It probably won't hold as good as a Honda but I think it will hold up just as good as our competitors: 350z, RX8, STi.

Only time will tell.

This car will probably lose value faster than anything else on the road. Just ask some of the people who paid $30K for one, drove it for 5000 miles and then try to sell it for $27K. Forget it. Try $23K. People will not want to buy these used because they'll assume they've been thouroughly abused. An AWD vehicle thats been abused is a nightmare ( especially with Mitsubishi's lower quality scores). Great bang for the buck, but you better plan on holding on to it for a while. I'll tell you right now that if someone came to me with a used EVO with 5000 miles on it and wanted $25K or more I'd laugh in his face and spend the extra $3000 to get a brand new one I can break in myself.

The norm is not to buy a car, drive it for a few months, and sell it. Anyone who does this is for ANY car will be losing thousands of dollars. The question is how will they hold up as a 2-3 year old car with 30+k miles. Personally I think they'll hold up pretty well.

Hi all.
Newbie here - this is my 1st post.

I've been eyeing on the Evo for a few weeks now. I was also concern about resale value but unfortunately no one will know for sure until probably 12-24 months from now.

But I've pretty much decided to get an Evo within the next couple of weeks!

The lease residual value on this car is $10,476 after 4 years. It doesn't get much worse than that.

Ouch - that's about 30% after 4 years...

the "average" Mitsu cars depreciate to approx 25% of orig. MSRP value after 5 years...

Cordwood, do you have an industry listing of the residual value for 12 mos, 24 mos, 36 mos, and 48 mos?

To my knowledge, there's no industry listing yet.

Cordwood's talking about a lease residual value; hence it can be used merely as a *gauge* of what to expect...

The lease residual is a prediction of what the car will be worth in 4 years. It is not FACT. It's the same as if you asked any one of us, "what do you think the value of the EVO will be in 4 years?". They probably estimated the value based on other Mitsubishi's but in the end it's still an estimate. On my Prelude the residual was $14,000 and at the end of my lease the car was worth $17-18k.

lease residuals always error on the low side so that they can get more money from you, then when the customer turns the car in, the dealership can make more money on the car because "buy out" < "car's value". If they errored on the high side the dealership would loose money on the entire lease.

What determines the car's price is what the seller is willing to sell the car for AND what the buyer is willing to pay for the car. Buyers want to buy low...sellers want to sell high. The middle ground is what the car is worth.

There's other variables as well. Like supply and demand. Are there lots of EVO's on the market? Are there lots of potential buyers in the market?

My reasons for the EVO holding its value is:
1.) low production (leads to, not many used EVO's in the market) Look at how hard it is to find a good Supra, Integra TypeR...etc. This leads to a sellers market.

2.) I believe there will be good demand for the EVO in the future. This is the best track vehicle for under $30k. It has all the aftermarket goodies that many of the ricers want and it IS the best performance 4 cyclinder in the nation. This leads to many potential buyers...but it hinges on one thing...how will the car hold up. If the car breaks down time and time again then the car will not be worth anything...but if it holds up (which I think it will) then it will be on the list for many buyers that are looking for the ultimate import car.

low supply + good demand = good value.
