Broken Evo 9 Gearbox!

I was at the track today in my Evo 9 GSR and on the last run of the day i changed into 4th and there was no drive at all, the car shifts into 4th but when throttle is applied the car doesnt drive and it free revs while not moving foward, the gearbox has crunched for a few weeks so was half expecting this to happen.

Now that im looking for a new gearbox im looking to put a Evo 9 5 speed and am wondering if this will be a straight replacement from the 6 speed? If not what modifications will need to be made? The car is already running a diff from an Evo 9 RS as the AYC/ACD unit kept causing problems.

Thanks for your help

Are you sure that it's something wrong in the tranny and not just a worn out clutch that's slipping?

I was also going to ask the same thing. Something similar happened to me before and it it just ended up being the clutch.

Can the clutch affect specific gears? I thought it would slip in all gears.

I've got a feeling the OP had a 5 speed swap on the cards anyway.

OP: where in NZ are you? What track were you on?

The clutch will slip first in higher gears. The reason there are lower gears is so the vehicle can start moving and accelerate without the engine exerting as much effort.

Yeah the 5 speed swap was always on the cards but will be happening next week now, The clutch was brand new and the gearbox has been crunching in 3rd 4th and 5th for a while now

Im based in Napier but this was in Ruapuna for the BNT V8s meeting

About 2 months - We have never had issues with the clutch but the gearbox was about 3 seasons old and was about a month away from being thrown away for a 5 speed anyway.

When the clutch slips would it not eventually grab and start driving the car instead of just free revving?
