Thumping sound when shift, help!

I test drove an evo I have been looking to buy and when I got on it there was a thumping sound when I shifted gears, I asked the owner what the noise was and he said it was normal. He said it was because it's all wheel drive and the power goes directly to the wheels. It isn't a real loud thump but definitely noticeable.

can anyone give me info?

There are plenty of evos around. Take your time and try to find one with no issues.

where you shifiting it kind of hard? if so then yes this is normal. there is a lot of drive tran so when its shifted hard its just all the power making its way to the wheels.

if it's coming from the rear end under a hard, high rpm shift (wot, fast shifting) that's the rear diff and is a normal noise (can be eliminated with new mounts and a moustache bar)

if it's coming from somewhere else that's not normal

Demon is right, if you're shifting fast & letting the clutch out fast and you are hearing that clunking sound, its most likely coming from the rear end which can be eliminated with the mods mentioned above.

Normal. You can replace the rear diff bushings to eliminate it.

its pretty much normal...dont forget ur driving an awd that makes plenty of torque, think of it this way....if u were driving a fwd car with the same power you would get wheel spin when hard shifting in the lower gears

As long as it's the rear you're good. The diff hits pretty hard when you get on it.

dont drop the clutch under wot. If thats what you were doing and it made that noise it was the driveshaft/diff hitting the top of your chass. It happened to me when i first got my Evo. I learned never to drop the clutch on WOT anymore!

This thumping sound you hear, can you feel it in the shifter too? I just bought an Evo last week and when I am doing quick shifts I can feel it kinda clunk into gear but under low rpm slow shifts I don't feel/hear it any more. Same thing you guys are talking about or should I be worried?
