i'm trying to figure out whether the broken piece was from a 50$ HID setup, or the more expensive OEM headlight housing.

Based on the service manual, that piece was NOT from my headlight housing but from the HID kit

To the OP: After seeing your pics I realized that I had broken the same piece on my JDM VIII non-HID headlight. I thought it was a JDM specific piece, so I bought an entire JDM headlight assembly/housing.

Now after seeing your pics I realize that you and I both broke the same little cruddy grey, plastic retaining ring. So, it seems that the USDM non-HID and JDM non-HID headlights both share the same little bits after all.

Wow, how stupi-dupi of me

I have a passenger side hid bulb and housing. It's not the whole headlight assembly it's just the hid housing. It does look a bit different then you pic because it has a clip that holds the bulb in. Not sure if this would help you out or not? ( i have the ballast also)

FAIL. The plastic piece IS original and essentially holds the bulb in place. Anyone have a busted headlight with that plastic ring intact?
