first evo, evo 9. engine problems. help

hey all, i picked up this evo 9 a few days ago, and its been burning oil ever since. of course the owner lied to me when i checked it and said that oil can henrys must of not filled it up all the way.

i dont know much about these cars yet, as i have been into euro cars my whole life, but its burning about a half qrt oil a day. the engine only has 10,000 miles on it and it was built buy english racing in Camas WA.

ive checked everything i could think of tonight to see what is going on with this car..
i pulled the lower hose off the intercooler to see if there was excess oil, but it was bone dry.. then i pulled the exhaust side off the turbo to see if there was any oil there. None, just a lot of carbon.
then i went on to think, what if the rings never seated correctly. Compression test checked out fine on all pistons. at 3 cranks it was 120-130. and 10 cranks around 160 for every cylinder. I took a bore scope down and saw that the pistons werent covered in oil but there was a lot of carbon on them.
when i pulled the spark plugs off i noticed it was really white. incredibly white.. the tune im guessing is off. its puffing white smoke.

i picked up a wideband o2 sensor tonight ill install it tomorrow. That will give me a little more info.

other than that i dont know what the problem is, i have a few theories..

1) the pcv isnt letting out the pressure in the crankcase and therefore pressurizing the oil and sending it out the exhaust.

2) valve seals are bad. havent checked this yet. hopefully will tomorrow.

has anyone else experienced this, there are no leaks what so ever.
input would be much appreciated - first post

Are you located close to english racing? If you are you could try taking it there..
There are good chances that the owner used to be, or still is on here. Even higher chances that members on here know the car from the local area, you could post pics.

Try calling english racing, they're a great bunch of guys and they know their way around evos. You'll only hear good things about them on here.

I can't find the article now, but this car was recently for sale, arctic silver if i remember right.

English built the engine, and you should contact them first about it; they're friendly

burning 1/2 a quart a day... isnt normal for a built motor, or any evo motor at that. ^^^ iuno where you heard that. unless the OP is driving 3000 miles daily then "MAYBE" 1/2 a quart / day in that case is ok. but still i dont think its normal. take it to English Racing if it was built there.

yeah i am in spokane wa, so its kinda of a far drive. ive been attempting to fix it here with my mechanic buddies.

i got a wideband o2 and it will be installed tomorrow to see why its running so lean, tune is off.

English racing has no idea what is wrong with it ive talked to them about 5 times now about it, and they said it isnt in the warranty if its anything other than the rings.

i pulled the valve cover cap off while idling and held a piece of paper over the top to see if it is getting suction. If it wasnt then i would know the pcv valves are clogged. its getting great suction, i can even feel it with my hand. Still though i heard there is more than one pcv valve so one might be jammed..

the only thing i can think of now is that the engine is running so hot that its burning the oil. but temp is ok. possibility that valve seals are torn.

nobody has any ideas? :S

Puffing white smoke means you're burning coolant/water. Oil causes blue smoke...
Pop the radiator cap and look for brown specs floating.

Hope you paid an amount that reflects having to at the very least refresh the motor. If not, its a good life lesson. Best of luck.

Had the white smoke problem with my DSM, changed the valve stem seals and it instantly solved the problem.

you are VERY close to blowing your motor, if your plugs are very white that means you are burning really lean, which means your running hotter, which means you could be burning oil. BUT if you have white smoke that disapates very quickly its more than likely water which could mean a blown head gasket.. If the previous owner lied once then he could have been pulling your leg about everything. Evo motors are $$$$$$ so take it to a Professional experienced tuner or get an email tune from a good tuner like ams ttp ect and find out why its burning oil.. wow man i bought my evo 9 in 09 and have had nothing but problems, im not going to point any fingers but a bad tune and a mix of some bad parts and loose bolts have caused me all kinds of issues. spend a little money now to get all the little things fixed to save u a hell of alot more money in the long run
