What's up with e85

Ever since I've joined this forum I've been seeing people running e85..I've been dying to know the low down! What's the plus running it over pump gas and what's required to make my Evo run on it...

The search function is a wonderful tool.

Since I'm feeling generous today....

Advantages: increased power, increased spool, increased octane, chemical cooling of intake charge

Disadvantages: inconsistant mixes (depending on where you buy- there are race blends that are 100% consistent), huge problems with possible contamination - i.e. taking a road trip on e85 is a bad idea, and you will need to run a tank of pump gas through from time to time (every few months) to prevent gunk issues (to be on the safe side)

What will you need? Depending on what your current modifcations are, most likely- bigger injectors, higher flowing fuel system, and a retune.

Just so u know there are tons of threads on this...... search is your friend. A quick explanation is that it's ethanol and e85 means 85% ethanol if its not a winter mix. Ethanol has a higher octane rating than any consumer pump gas available. Therefore you can run higher cylinder pressures safely (without knock or detonation) which means more boost and timing and that equates to more power. Drawbacks are 1 part ethanol contains around 30% less energy than 1 part of gasoline so therefore equates to lower gas mileage. . This is also why u need to run more volume of it. U need to be a bit more on top of watching for build up since some have had issues with the e85 pushing junk through the fuel system and clogging injectors. If your stock right now u would be fine with some 1000-1200cc injectors and a single walbro 255 fuel pump.

EDIT: Looks like sdevo beat me to it. my post can be his echo........

Appreciate it fellas...e85 isn't really in my area yet. There's only one gas station I kno of that sells it...and I'm getting the hint ethanol wouldn't be practicle for a daily driver then, more for power. I'm just trying to get my car to 400 whp and I was curious about it...I'm at 342 with or do when I hit 400 I'm done ha (yea rite)

To toss an alternate perspective into the discussion, I said all I wanted was the power left uncorked with a mild tune and that's what I got. The car is a hoot to drive, usable power everywhere, and it's reliable to a fault: No funny noises, no temperamental behavior, no parts breaking, car drives better than stock. YMMV

E85 is new to me too, less then a week from my switch over.. I am having to learn/deal with different idle & drive problems till I get all the bugs worked out. The power from E85 is unbelievable. Totally worth it once you have it fine tuned.
Enjoy

That is a pretty terrible analysis.

Reason I like E85:
1. Runs very cold. Turbocharged vehicles love it and will allow aggressive timing.
2. Very little CO gases
3. Isn't leaded and won't eat my O2 sensors like leaded gas.

Direct from the refinery, or from 2 resellers nearby who keep about 1000 gallons on hand, or from the pump in two locations close to me. All the same thing.
