it comes down to the type of battery. I have a sealed Optima Yellow in my trunk with no box and have never had problems from the inspectors. if it's not a sealed battery then you will need a box.

You need it to be held down no matter what kind of battery it is.

^ +1 also if you plan on doing drag or autocross or road racing, you need to have a battery cut off switch on the outside of the car. I.E. back of trunk or where the license plate is.

No battery box needed lol... go for broke

As long as you use a sealed AGM battery you will have zero issues! Heres my setup. (major thanks to ezzey for the help with the custom battery mount)

This pic was taken when it was being instaled, It is unfinished in this pic, but you get the idea Shes safe and sound where the battery should have been from factory

I would box it, my track requires a box regardless or dry-cell or wet-cell. At the very least you won't have to worry about something bumping into it.

Just hit up your local part store and get the marine box enclosure. For a DD I wouldn't feel comfortable with having exposed terminals. I think the box was less than $20 last time I checked.

Also, make sure you use bigger gauge battery cable.

The purpose of the battery box is to protect the driver if the thing explodes... is there a battery box in your engine bay? no, because there is a fire wall. Does there need to be a box in your trunk... basically, no.... if it is possible to battery acid to come in contact with the driver in any way, that is where a box should be considered.

Hope that is the simple logical answer you were looking for.

I have a sheild blocking the front of the battery connections. I have no worries putting anything in my trunk, went camping last year and fully loaded my trunk without an issue Plus if you really have things that can fly around in your trunk...well id advise against that and reccommend getting a cargo net, or trunk organizer to ensure things dont fly around. All in all its preference
Good luck with your relocation

Logical yes.. but... remember a AGM battery is filled with gel elctrolyte, even if the battery did explode (which chances are literally next to none), it is not a liquid. (on regards to non AGM batteries, a vented battery box is a must to ensure fumes and acid over spill is not allowed in the passenger compartment) I can see the box helping the battery not getting damaged from items loosely left in trunk under spirited driving. Only other reason id think of it is if it was required at a track, other than that, its not needed. But again the option is totally up to you! If you really see an issue, box it up and call it a day
