How to mount video camera for in car vids?

Hi,

I would like to capture some in car video at an upcoming track day. For those of you who have done this in the EVO, what type of camera mount did you use and where did you get it?

Thanks,

Derek

I use a plain old-fashioned camera tripod.

One leg each stands on the floor, secured by bungee cord (tied to the driver/passenger seat rail), the center leg is jammed onto the gap between the seat, secured by the center seat belt.

Works fine for me so far.

I've seen a Japanese product whereby the camera stand is mounted on the rear windshield on suction cups.

TIP: when getting a tripod, get one whose legs can be spread further apart. That will allow the camera to be mounted more rearwards, thus allowing a more 'panoramic' view of the track.

Vivid Racing has this camera. I just copied this information off from their website.

Vivid Racing has battled through with AutoXcam to bring you this inexpensive simple kit for home video for only $399!!!

Autoxcam II Video Kit by VR includes:
> > > > - Camera
> > > > - Power cables
> > > > - microphone
> > > > - 2 mounts (side window and suction cup)
> > > > - Camera Protector

Wants some stats on the camera?

Sony Ex-view 1/3" image sensor
Highest resolution and lowest lux imaging available for color
Connects to your standard VCR, camcorder (with A/V in), or our digital processor
Imaging at least 10 times better than other cameras which purportedly "spec" at 430 - 480 lines, 0.1 to 0.08 lux!
Sharp high-resolution picture
Wide-angle 92 degree (diag.) 3.7mm micro lens, 0.9" diameter, 2.75" long, 220 grams
Sealed metal housing, perfect for on-board and outside-of-car video
Standard Automobile Power adapter plug
Video Output: 1.0Vp-p composite. 75 Ohm
Output Connectors: RCA or BNC connector, RCA cables and connectors included
Operating temperature: 14° to 122° F (-10° to 50° C)
Industry-proven anti-vibration ball and socket mounting systems that reduce vibration and provide flexibility for mounting in almost any part of your car.

The camera is powered by your cigarette lighter in your car. If you do not have one by weird chance it just needs to be powered by simple 12v with power and ground. So tap it in anywere to run it all the time. Mount the high quality mini microphone on your dash, in your engine, or anywhere you please for awesome sound. The suction mount system can be used inside or outside the car and is EXTREMELY stable.

I'm actually making a camera mount this week for my track event this weekend. We already made one for my roomates WRX and it works perfect.. costs about $25 and looks great.

It mounts on the passenger seat between the harness holes and extends into the center in between the two seats, has an adjustable locking swivel mount as well.

Thanks for the suggestions!!

The Renn Art one looks very nice. I think if I had to buy a complete kit that would be the one. Looks like it is very flexible and will work with many cars. But I'm afraid I don't have enough time to get one before I leave for the track Thursday morning.

I am in the process of making something to be bolted into the center child seat anchor. It'll be a hack job with hardware store parts, but I think it'll work fine and cost me less than $30. We'll see how it goes and I'll post a pic for future reference if successful.

ev8sive: You're talking about this weekends event at Thunderhill, right? I'll have to check out what you've made this weekend!

They have lots of goodies . I like the Cone Cam, but my video camera doesn't have the necessary inputs (it's very old).
