rusted bolts & nuts.

I read this off another forum and I thought I would share because the results are not what you would expect.

I thought this was interesting enough to share... Even though all of us don't have rusty nuts and bolts on the race cars, we sometimes work on things that do...

Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results!

*They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.*

*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*

None ...................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ................... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ......... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil .............. 106 pounds
Power Steering Fluid-Acetone mix........53 pounds

*The Power Steering Fluid-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 fluid and acetone*
*Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.*

I've used the ps and acetone mix for a few years now. Works great on rusty jeep parts. The acetone helps to break down the rust and works as a delivery agent for the power steering fluid. And it's cheap!

i use a mix of old Diesel fuel and Old industrial gear box oil [Synthetic Mobil 1 SHC634]
I have yet to find a bolt, or lock rusted enough or weatherd enough to break on me using this combination. plus the best part is this stuff is free since its waste oils. And its light enough that you can spray it out of a windex bottle
also depends on the bolt, anyone ever try too get a stainless bolt out of weatherd aluminum?

Same here. Never bought Liquid Wrench because I thought the same.

Either way, I stopped using penetrating liquids and bought myself a MAP torch. On my list of best tools, right next to the electric impact gun.

I'm going to have to try this. I use the penetrating oil and if that still doesn't work, i just pound on a slightly smaller socket haha.
