Blown 8 turbo?

So I was wondering if anyone has had or knows the symptoms or a blown turbo? I ask because I'm afraid that my stock 8 turbo is now blown, turbo has 65k. I turned on the car today for a few minutes and immediately noticed a burnt smell, popped the hood and the smell is directly above where the turbo sits and no other location. The day before car sounded a bit odd as I would hear popping from my exhaust but didn't notice why. Car doesnt pop from exhaust anymore but it smells bad, would hate to damage anything else so I won't be driving the car until I can take things apart. Any ideas greatly appreciated

Are there any signs of smoke coming from the exhaust or near the turbo? Do you also see any oil?

Don't drive it just get the seals rebuilt bearings replaced and check for shaft play. Upon install put a cap-full of oil in the feed section of the oil port feed side of the turbo and rotate it for 60 seconds and install it and you should be straight.

Is there anything to look for in or around the turbo? I haven't had any smoke anywhere and ran the car today smell is gone but now I have a strange sound from the turbo like something inside is loose.

ya, pull off the intake and see if the shaft spins or moves. Also maybe pop off an IC pipe and see if its blowing oil into the intercooler pipes

Good sign of the turbo going out is a supercharger type whine at WOT. Mine did it pretty bad when mine went out.

I'm assuming the turbo is not exactly blown but it obviously needs a rebuild and would hate to make matters worse and keep driving it. Looking into buying at least a 9 turbo, as something much bigger will require more upgrades which I have no funds for at the moment
