I am just warried about cops and Cali ***** gas.

I just did the trip from Cali out to VA in August with my Evo. It wasn't too bad and I got about 300 miles per tank. I wouldn't suggest speeding over 80 until you get to New Mexico. Through Arizona and New Mexico I averaged over 100 mph. I hit 140 from 80 while staying in 5th gear. Nice. I wish I was moving back to Cali, too. That's one trip I wouldn't mind making. As far as the gas, the worst gas I encountered was in Arkansas and Texas - 90 octane was the highest they had. WEAK..
Good luck and drive safely.

go for it when ya leaving. better put a 5 gallon reserve tank of 112 in the car to add a gallon or so when you get crap for gas. video tape some of it. walkie talkies rock and got me out of some trouble passing through Tenn before. man in New mexico the 18 wheelers go over 100, have fun, and do the cruise ahead thing for speed traps so one can have a little 140mph fun. hehe
Thanks guys. I know its going to be alot of fun and I will take alot of pics plus i will post pics of both cars befor we go and after. I already got Walkie Talkie infact first thing I bought. I have a really good new radar detector but i can trust that thing with Laser so does anyone of you guys know which states will shoot laser insted of radar if so that will be great.
I have done that trip many times [not in evo], but you will have no problem finding well know gas stations such as Chevron all along your route. Watch the Arizona troopers. Got stopped there and they have great hiding places especially near Flagstaff. Also, Arkansas troopers are sneaky by hiding in the brush like the Dukes of Hazzard.
Take it easy and enjoy your trip.

My wife and I did the trip from MD to Las Vegas in October. We both would cruise around 80 mph. Some states we were chillin at 85-90. I was just going with the flow. Nice trip. I was driving the EVO and the wife in her CRV. Oh yeah, we had some Motorola walkie talkies. A must. I had no radar either.
I am just afraid from snow and ice nothing else. I rememebr 3 years ago when i did it Texas, amarelo was coverd with more than 20 inches of snow and ice we had to stop for 2 days in a motel. Texas was nasty they did not even have an open gas station nor dealing with snow.
I did a trip accross the country on a supercharged 97 M3 back in '99
. I did all I-80 and I-70
My tips:
1) Buy a car bra. It's a must unless you want to get a new paint job.
2) Stock up water and some food.
3) I assume you have a cell phone.
4) Take a leak and stop every 3-4 hours at most.
5) Don't speed in the dessert. The unseen dust will sandblast your paint and winshield.
6) New oil before and after.
7) A box of octane booster. Gas in the dessert states is really bad.
8) Radar and CB as stated above.
9) If pulled over, be polite and just give info as neccessary...who knows you can get away. One in Wyoming asked me "Is that a Lotus?" just because I was wearing a Lotus jacket.

I did the drive from NoVA to SoCal last week. It took me about 32 hours to drive.
Here are my pointers.
You can begin speeding in Tennessee. You just have to slow down when you near population centers. Once into Little Rock, you can pretty much drive as fast as you please. But keep your radar detector handy. My V1 saved my *** 5 times. The bulk of the police we saw were in VA. But we ran into at least one speed trap each day. Keep an eye on the bridge overpasses in the flat lands. The cops like to hide behind the concrete pillars. Bring along 2 bottles of octane boost. The 90 octane fuel is in New Mexico and in the eastern portion of Arizona. I had to fill up with 2 tanks of that watery swill. It was soo weak that I was throwing CEL's with a fairly stock set-up. Try to avoid fueling up in Needles, CA. The 91 octane was like $2.20 a gallon!

btw, there was a few inches of snow on the ground in Flagstaff when I went through. But none on the roads. It was certainly cold enough to snow during the nights!

Are you driving on the stock tires? That would make snow/ice even worse...
I would recommend one of those cheap 12v coolers. Seen em for 30 bucks, hold a 6 pack. That means less stops for drinks, though maybe more for pissing =) Might be handy in the deserted areas though. I now use mine for a fridge at work, it came with an ac adaptor too. Got it at Target...
