It's a white EVO8

Why do people frown at lack of AYC?

This is a blessing guys. All my Japanese friends who are into cars are green with envy (I lived there for 10 years).

Japanese purists seem to hate the AYC on the Evo VIII... Guess it gets in the way. No one seems to like it...

Like what Willie said, I don't like the non-JDM 2.5 litre engine with funky injectors, ECU, Turbo (VF39 smaller than the VF30) and Intercooler. I would like the option to go beyond a simple boost controller, exhaust and intake upgrade. Sure they will have parts for the 2.5 in years to come, chances are, they're non-JDM.

It was a very difficult decision..until the discovery of the components of the USDM STi.

Sure both the STi and Evo have strengths and weaknesses:

I frown at the Evo interior, lack of AYC/ACD and lack of 6-speed and love the Evo Recaros, Wheels, Rear Spoiler

I hate the USDM STi Engine, STi wheels but love the interior, 6 speed and DCCD.

Engine is probably the most important factor that has a huge weight in my decision. My choice is clearly the Evo, not to mention the great price I'll be paying for my Evo, $29,000 plus a $500 college graduate rebate, bringing the price down to approximately $28,500 before taxes.

Reason go to EVO 2 : Everything on EVO is so J-spec except AYC and ACD , but the mitsu dealer offer me $28500 on the Evo and i save $3300 with tax compare to the STI , plus if STI the first thing i will do is the stereo , once you spend of course have to be decent , so looking arround $1500 there , and Evo already come with it even though is not fancy but i can live with that .

I think maybe you guys should think another direction for Sti. I actually appreciate the 2.5L engine that Subaru’s doing because we have crappy gas here in U.S. In Japan, 95 or higher octane of gas is everywhere.

If we have the “exact” JDM Sti in U.S, I guess it will have trouble revving to 8000rpm due to detonation or the ecu will retard the timing automatically so it will be much less powerful. So, if 2.5L is the reliable way to produce 300hp on 91 octanes of gas, why not?
(Aftermarket parts do not count because they do not have to deal with warranty issue)

I have a lot of respect for Evo, but I really don’t like that Mitsubishi was sending ringer cars for magazine for testing purpose. Mitsubishi cheats, and they thought we are stupid to believe that.

Anticipating that same scenario I opted for the EVO back in March. I'm driving...they're still bench racing and waiting.

Never look back.

How do you know Mitsubishi did that? Seriously, I'm not here to question your credibility. I just want to understand the situation because since we cannot test drive these cars and I have no friends that own the EVO, I can only rely on these forums and magazine tests to help me decide on which car to buy.

Thanks,
Dave

I had the exact JDM STI C spec 2001 - engine - ecu - drivetrain etc in my US WRX and it ran 100% fine on 94 octane

Its the 91 octane **** CA gas that causes the problem - - and its the same story in the UK also

Bryan,

No disrespect to you or anyone, but from our posts, you can already tell that we're into aftermarket parts, hence our reasoning for disliking the 2.5. If we didn't intend to modify our cars, STi will be the car to get.

Our purchase is not dependent on the US magazine reviews whatsoever. We know what the Evo can do from the Japanese magazines and we're going toward that direction.

The whole point of Japanese Turbo cars is to have fun with the aftermarket parts. Also the reason why I initially stepped down from my 2001 911 Turbo to the WRX and now the Evo.

I paid $30,052 for mine with no sunroof.... very happy with it so far.
which dealer did you buy yours from, and where are you at...?

I have yet to see any other EVO's in my neck of the woods...

you know what...?
it sounds like a lotta people (relatively) are going with the evo after getting tired of sitting on the sti waiting list. the fact of the matter is:
they're going to be just as happy (if not happier) with their evo than they would with their sti. they're both brilliant cars! i know there's a lotta vs. subaru stuff, but coming from a subaru owner, i really have nothing but respect for the evo viii (even if i think the v and vi are bettar! )

June C&D STi vs EVO

June Car&Driver compares the "New Wave Slingshots". The performance numbers look more inline than the numbers from Motor Trend (Evo 13.08@105). I believe C&D's 13.6@101 is more likely. The STi's 300hp is easily more apparent in C&D's test (STi 13.2@103) but they still give First Place to the Evolution based on what appears to be mostly "fun factor". Granted all their test drivers were quoted as saying the Evo felt more comfortable driving it quickly. It was a very good comparison of the two, giving each car credit where it was due.

The article about Rod Millen preferring the Evo says a lot ...quote "The Subaru just feels a lot more nervous than the Mitsubishi."

The recent magazine comparisons make me think that this is what the SVT guys are upset about. With these mags calling this the "new" ponycar wars I think these guys are getting jealous of all the media attention for the Evo and STi. With no Camaros around to toy with they've got to start picking on the import crowd. They can't hang with the Z06/Viper bunch because of lower horsepower and all around performance PLUS Z06's and Vipers are closer to Supercar status than the Cobra. Yeah, a supercharged V8 with 390hp is great, but still not in the same league as the Viper/Vette. I'm not trying to restart the SVT/Evo pissing contest again just giving my newly formed opinion.

I just would love to see their faces when a lightly modded, tuned Evo (or STi for that matter) outruns them on the street and at the track. They would have to be in bed at night going..."How in the F@#k did I lose to a 4 cylinder?!!"

After reading all these articles I feel I made the right choice in picking the Evolution, but I'll still give props to all the STi guys I meet.

Lee

You should have seen the face of the last Z06 driver than I beat at our local 1/8 mile. I've beaten every Z06 Vette I've raced at our local track. The crowd and the announcer love it. My best 1/8 mile time in my modded WRX is 8.18. Most the Z06's I've been racing are running in the 8.50 range at our track. Traction is everything in the 1/8 mile.

I know its only an 1/8 mile but hay thats how long the track is. They can't blame me for that. Also the 1/8 mile is a race from 0-85mph or so. Thats a pretty good race if you ask me.

And don't even bring up racing on the street. A Vette doesn't stand a chance from a dead stop on the street.
