Wow, just read that....why is that company still in business? On another note...is there a way to install Super AYC and ACD on the US Evo?

12 years of road course and SOLO II experience thank you very much, including a few championships.

Re: Keep well-sorted WRX or buy EVO

I'm in quandry- I've got what I consider to be a very well sorted WRX that can see autox/track/rallyx/grocery getting duties.

I'm running the STi RA suspension (struts/springs/sways) w/ the full compliment of Grp N bushings (strut tops/engine/tranny/rear diff mounts/lateral/trailing links), TE37's wrapped w/ Toyo T1S's (summer), oe rims wrapped w/ Nokian NRWS winter/gravel.

I'm running a STi catless uppipe and Hayward and Scott downpipe and catback. Samco intercooler/turbo inlet/airbox hoses. Ecutek reflashed ecu. HP/torque ~ 280ish crank. Spoolup is lightning, low/midrange torque excellent.

Brakes are oe calipers w/ Endless CCX front/NAY's rear, Goodridge lines, Motul fluid, DBA club spec two piece rotors front.

Primitive skid plates front/rear diff, Morette HID's.

I test drove a EVO the other day, not as a hard as I would like, but enough to get a good feel.

I like the brake setup of the EVO, nice calipers, big rotors- new pads, lines, fluid and track fade will likely not be a problem. This is a big plus over the WRX (ofcourse a $2500 AP setup would cure the rex).

I like the 13:1 quick steering rack. I don't like the 16:1 rack of the WRX.

I like the aluminum suspension bits- front control arms, rear multi link- even the cross member! There are evidently some pillow ball bushings in the mix, but not pointed out which ones.

I like the fact that it comes w/ real tires.

I like the fact that rear camber is adjustable.

The wheels, while nice looking are a bit heavy at 22 lbs- TE37's would cure that woe and the Enkies would make good winter/gravel wheels.

I like the fact the EVO has several forged components in the engine.

I don't like the lag, even w/ the twin scroll it's not close to the WRX on spool. With a bigger turbo and a FMIC that is to be expected- but I still don't like it.
There are surely ways to quicken the spool of the EVO (but I don't know what they are).

The springs while better than the oe WRX, must be softer than the STi RA setup (more body roll)- hopefully this could be easily rectified. There was quite a bit of understeer w/ the EVO (as was the case w/ the WRX oe) and I'm sure w/ a smaller front sway bar and some alignment tweaks it would be much more neutral.

The rear taillights- enough said there

All in all a very good car w/ many pluses (and a few minuses). The down side is I will have to pay for those pluses. MSRP $29,500 (won't pay a penny over) - minus my trade $18,000 = $11,500 minus the ~ $2500 I can get for bits off of my car- roughly $9,000.

Worth it? The million dollar question.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

If you can get the deal you are proposing, you'll be happier with the EVO in the end because you are starting way ahead of the stock WRX. OTOH, you have a very nice car there, and frankly, I don't think you'll get $18K in trade.
I got $16.3K for my MY02 Blaze Yellow WRX and paid $29964 for the EVO. With the tax savings my trade ended up around $17.8K so my balance was around $14.4K or so. I did get some money from the stuff I removed from the WRX, but no where near what I paid for it I'm sorry to say this, but the WRX bunch are a lot of tightwads and wont buy stuff from people unless you practically give away. I sold some brand new, never installed parts and I could only geyt about half of what they sell for from the dealers
Anyway, if you do get the EVO, you'll find that you'll surpass the performance of your WRX (as nice as it is) very easily and for not nearly as much as you spent on the WRX. I'm glad I traded in my WRX. I had a few doubts at first, but they are gone now for sure

I got my $18,000 figure from both NADA and KBB, ranged from $17,900 - $18,400, this was trade in value.

The only things I'd leave on the WRX are the rear spoiler, painted side spoilers and turbo inlet pipe (had to hack the old one up to get it out). Everything else I'd sell, discounting everything siginificantly (I agree- tough crowd to sell to) I've revised my recoup on parts closer to $4,000 (more stuff than I thought).

I agree also - EVO is a higher platform from which to build.

It's in the dealer's hands now.

You might be right on your figures. My car did have around 30K miles and that hurt the trade in. You might have to either hold on to your parts for a while or let them go cheap but eventually you'll sell them.
Getting the EVO and selling the WRX is definitely not a wise financial decision, but it is definitely a car enthusiast decision
You'll be happy either way but I think the EVO definitely rocks. I'm considering less than $1K worth of mods that will probably net me about 310HP or more at the crank That should just about make me happy for a good while. I spent well over $1.6K in the WRX but was very dissapointed with the results. You probably will end up spending twice that (you want more stuff) but you'll really like the EVO much better. I even think that with the mods you'll do, you'll be faster and quicker than the STi and still spend less money. If the dealers where you are give you grief, you should really consider Carmax here near Atlanta. They have the cars and they sell them for *under* msrp.

Good luck

I'd say if you can get $18k on the trade and get the EVO for MSRP or less, just bite the bullet and get it over with.

Your WRX is very well sorted but that only helps in a private sale. There are dealers here in the Northern VA area offering brand new '03 WRXs for $21.4k. Would make $18 for a used one appear to be expensive. Of course there are also dealers selling used 2002s for more than that. Depends on how saavy a shopper the buyer is.

New EVOs here can be had for $28,505 + tax & tags. (A00 Large rear spoiler, no sunroof). But those dealers would not give you a reasonable trare allowance for your car.

Tough decision, but if you are at all like me, you will continue to agonize over the decision until you finally do it.

Good luck.

I agree financialy this is not the smartest move I've been considering. I think part of my reasons for even considering it is I've got the WRX where I planned on taking it (a trackable/autoxing/rallxing dependable daily driver). Doing all the mods myself was half the enjoyment and w/ me being close to done- I see that running out.

Parts I can take my time in selling, which should help on a little better recoup on that end.

I'm holding tight on my offer, so we'll see.

Watching the Motortrend speed testing on speedvision yesterday, I have to admit whetted my appetite more- the EVO did very well!

I have gone through that same cycle time after time with cars and for the past six years, H-D motorcycles. I get them exactly where I want them and then sell them. I have lost thousands of dollars each time but it never stopped me from doing it all over again. I accepted the losses as the cost of playing that game. The EVO will be no diffeerent. You can never recover performance investments. No matter how much better your ride is because of it, people are not willing to compensate you for it. They'd rather spend their own time and money and potentially wind up with less.

My current H-D is the best yet and as close to a keeper as I have ever had and I'll keep this one. Not because I'm not ready to do it all over again, but because now I have the EVO to build.

STi fan sell his soul to EVO

I went to my Subaru dealer today and my salesman told me he will sell the car on 1st come 1st serve basis. 25 Serious buyers are on the list, and they will get like 5-6 cars for the rest of the year. Well, maybe I'll wait until next year, but now I got to have my toy.
It's a white EVO8

Congrats You will not be sorry on the decision. This car is an absolute joy to drive. And it's easy to make fast. Mark my words, Evo's will be faster for less money than the STi. I just have a gut feeling there will be problems with the new 2.5 motor. Have some fun with the coolest 4 banger on the planet.

Dude

I am exactly in your position , my username on NASIOC is ImprezaSTIVI , and i just came home from Mitsu dealer , and pick up the white one like you , i have deposit on STI for few month already , i am 3 place on the list , and still not sure i will get the car and what color , i have to said i GIVE UP , and for few reason ...

Reason go to EVO 1 : 2.5 litre actually turn me off a bit even its come with 300 hp and 300 ft/lb of torque , so far i know is different Intercooler , turbo , injector , Ecu and the japan STI have 8000 rpm to play with but USDM only have 7000 rpm , seems kinda weird for me , sweet part is six spd with dccd .

Reason go to EVO 2 : Everything on EVO is so J-spec except AYC and ACD , but the mitsu dealer offer me $28500 on the Evo and i save $3300 with tax compare to the STI , plus if STI the first thing i will do is the stereo , once you spend of course have to be decent , so looking arround $1500 there , and Evo already come with it even though is not fancy but i can live with that .
