All I found for the STi was that the 04 Impreza chassis was improved. I did not find any specific info about what made the STi structurally different. I think that somewhere it was reported that the lack of the STi sunroof was due to additional "ring reinforcemnt" in the roof but nothing specific.
Keep well-sorted WRX or buy EVO
I'm in quandry- I've got what I consider to be a very well sorted WRX that can see autox/track/rallyx/grocery getting duties.
I'm running the STi RA suspension (struts/springs/sways) w/ the full compliment of Grp N bushings (strut tops/engine/tranny/rear diff mounts/lateral/trailing links), TE37's wrapped w/ Toyo T1S's (summer), oe rims wrapped w/ Nokian NRWS winter/gravel.
I'm running a STi catless uppipe and Hayward and Scott downpipe and catback. Samco intercooler/turbo inlet/airbox hoses. Ecutek reflashed ecu. HP/torque ~ 280ish crank. Spoolup is lightning, low/midrange torque excellent.
Brakes are oe calipers w/ Endless CCX front/NAY's rear, Goodridge lines, Motul fluid, DBA club spec two piece rotors front.
Primitive skid plates front/rear diff, Morette HID's.
I test drove a EVO the other day, not as a hard as I would like, but enough to get a good feel.
I like the brake setup of the EVO, nice calipers, big rotors- new pads, lines, fluid and track fade will likely not be a problem. This is a big plus over the WRX (ofcourse a $2500 AP setup would cure the rex).
I like the 13:1 quick steering rack. I don't like the 16:1 rack of the WRX.
I like the aluminum suspension bits- front control arms, rear multi link- even the cross member! There are evidently some pillow ball bushings in the mix, but not pointed out which ones.
I like the fact that it comes w/ real tires.
I like the fact that rear camber is adjustable.
The wheels, while nice looking are a bit heavy at 22 lbs- TE37's would cure that woe and the Enkies would make good winter/gravel wheels.
I like the fact the EVO has several forged components in the engine.
I don't like the lag, even w/ the twin scroll it's not close to the WRX on spool. With a bigger turbo and a FMIC that is to be expected- but I still don't like it.
There are surely ways to quicken the spool of the EVO (but I don't know what they are).
The springs while better than the oe WRX, must be softer than the STi RA setup (more body roll)- hopefully this could be easily rectified. There was quite a bit of understeer w/ the EVO (as was the case w/ the WRX oe) and I'm sure w/ a smaller front sway bar and some alignment tweaks it would be much more neutral.
The rear taillights- enough said there
All in all a very good car w/ many pluses (and a few minuses). The down side is I will have to pay for those pluses. MSRP $29,500 (won't pay a penny over) - minus my trade $18,000 = $11,500 minus the ~ $2500 I can get for bits off of my car- roughly $9,000.
Worth it? The million dollar question.
Any thoughts would be welcome.

Re: Keep well-sorted WRX or buy EVO
I understand your dilemma... is it worth it to get an Evo for $9,000 more than your WRX? Probably yes, from a financial point of view alone, since you could easily spend those $9,000 on the WRX just to make it equal the Evi in terms of brakes, I/C, turbo, differential, ECU, etc.. And you wouldnt get the money for the mods back, or you would have to sell them separately.
Here's another reason you pointed out, very important for good feedback and an involving drive:
In short: the $9,000 could (almost, because of the steering) make your WRX equal an Evo but it would not be financially sensible to do that. I know people who do it because they love the boxer sound or because all their friends have WRXs, but not for logically valid reasons.

I guess everyone failed to notice the STi was much faster 0-60mph. It was also much faster in the street start 5-60mph.
The STi also completely killed the EVO in top end power. The STi ran to 130mph 4 seconds faster. 4 seconds at 130mph is a huge distance.
