look at motor trend as a dyno, this means that on an average the sti will be even slower that is what this is telling me .

Get me a decent number of real owners comparions (STi vs EVO) from the track, until then I will call any and all tests and reports (including car mags) BS.

EVO vs. STi, tuning potential

Like a lot of people, I'm planning to get either an EVO or an STi. I don't plan to leave it stock for long, so I'm wondering which car has more tuning potential. In stock form, they're pretty close in performance. We've all seen widely varying results between different people and different magazines. But what I really care about is which is the better car if I plan to drop $5-10K in mods? I plan to use it as a daily driver most of the time and autocross it every couple of months. Maybe driving schools once in a while.

Fun to drive is really important too. C&D seems to think the EVO is more fun to drive, and that counts a lot to me. I have a '96 M3 and a '02 WRX wagon, and while they're pretty close in a straight line, the M3 is WAY more fun to drive. (Well, I got about $10K worth of mods in the M3 while the WRX is bone stock.)

Anybody wanna buy a used WRX?

Traditional logic will tell you that the 2.5 liter will have more potential than the 2.0 liter engine. However, the 4g63 has been bettle tested for years, and it is well known how and what needs to be done for different power levels. There are also a lot of parts already available in the market for this car.
The 2.5 liter is unknown. It is US specific, and therefore there will be many less parts for this car, and they will all have been developed for the US specific market. Bear in mind that there will only be 5,000 STI cars in the US per year. Therefore, the parts will face higher development costs, becasue there will be less opportunity to make up the development costs. Although the engine is bigger and semi-closed deck, there is no understanding what is weak in the engine, or how much boost can be wrong out of it. Also there will be a year or more for parts to be developed for this car. Look at some Subaru sites, and there are still WRX parts under development, and that has been for 2 years.
ALso there is the issue of having a faster car, or a better handeling car. I bleieve it was Shiv who said that he would rather start with a better handeling car and make it faster then start with a fast car and try to improve the handeling.
The Sti is a great car, but I think for my money, I would rather have the EVO and less of a cartoon look (hood scoop) with the ability to tune the EVO for 1,500 dollars to get 40-50 more wheel hp instead of waiting for development on the STI

The U.S. STi doesn't even have a stock radio(but it is pre-wired), so you can definitely do something about it.
