I wonder if the EVO was basically stock, but had the boost bypass solenoid disconnected so it maintains its boost through redline, could explain alot..

OK, I'll explain...I was in no way slighting either ACD or AYC. My argument is that these two options are of no real use to those who have no intentions of taking the car OFF road. They are wonderful pieces of equipment from a technological standpoint, but make no difference in performance if you plan to keep the car on paved surfaces. I've driven a euro spec 7 on the street and at Laguna Seca, and trust me there is no major difference between the way that car handles and my 8. My comment was pointed at those who are using the ACD/AYC as reasons the STI or JDM/EDM 7's are in some way superior to our EVO. Please use other specs like hp/tq etc...to make that point. I would, however like to hear from another who has driven both EVO's tell me they noticed a difference in handling. Just a side note: I drove for a full season in the barber pro dodge series before I grew too tall...I'm no Michael Schumacher, but I have a tiny idea about how to drive a car. Not bragging just a little backup for my comments.

Lol I was jsut bout to post something bout Top Gear =) Well I read the 13.7 times for the EVO8 they have and i thought to myself "the ppl that magazine has test drive in my opinion are pretty good drivers" if you've seen the show you'll knwo what i mean =P You can probabyl download some clips or episodes on kazaa. 13.7 is slow compared to what people on this board are pulling with our "watered down" version of the evo eh? Maybe ours isn't as bad as everyone thought? Cause our magazines tested ours and got like 13.6 - 13.8 right? and they'r 8 falls in the middle? maybe all we're missing is the ayc acd and front diff.. I can't remember if the one they tested had the titanium turbo... ill check later

i guess the C&D article is more what we expected...the Sti wins the drag race, but loses around the 1.1 mile road course.

I am pretty sure (like someone stated on the I-club board) that Motor Trend times different and / or they correct their times to sealevel and 59F. Sort of how a G-tech takes your final terminal speed as your Trap Speed vs the real way.

Anyway..... (repeating myself once again)...if I can run 13.46 with a steaming hot car and penalizing myself by running it to 7800rpm, surely a 13.2-13.3 run is fairly certain.

Well, you guy have to read the whole article...
"Said it's not 100% like-kind comparo since the STi was barely broken in. "

The STi has not broken in yet...

Here is more info

Take all magazines articles for what they are worth. I feel the STi and EVO are equals. I do feel is and will always be my favorite. Its not just the 0-60 times and what not, its just the overall package, looks, styling and ease to work on. Subies are a pain in the *** to work on. I like how still keeps the EVO as sophisticated, but simple at the same time. Every change spark plugs on a subie boxer engine?? IT SUCKS. I think of things like that too. Anyway, I love my EVO and would not be happy with anything else.

Looks like another STi vs EVO topic again. Well, here is my oppinion. Get the car you really want and stop comparing and down grading one or another. Both are great cars and has a lot of potential. Both cars will get a lot of respect in the street. There are many pluses on owning an EVO over an STi and same way for STi over EVO. But neither of the 2 in my oppinion is better than the other. It will going to be drivers skill when it comes to it. Heck, I am still trying to control 130hp on my corolla GTS on the track and I do not think I am ready for 271hp and yet 300 hp. Drive both cars and study potentials on both and deliver a verdict.

well, I think both cars are great, and also there are advantage over both engine, if you have to talk about the spark plug on the boxer engine, what about changing the timing belt on the EVO?

Do you guys ever read the Brittish car magazines?

I picked up the newest issues of CAR, EVO, and Top Gear, and the EVO out performed the STI every time (Yes, it was the Euro EVO VIII w/ Yaw control).

They said both cars were outstanding, but picked the EVO as their top choice. I like them both.

heres my theory on these sketchy times..

many magazines takes their 1/4 mile #'s and runs them through a formula to account for elevation, temp, track conditions, etc. the answer is a theoretical 1/4 mi time and trap under ideal conditions, (sea level, perfect track, something like 30 degrees, etc.) this makes comparing´#'s published in diff magazines a bit innacurrate (but not by much)..

the issue is still that that formula would have been applied to both cars who ran one after other, and the evo still won.. still doesnt sound right... I love the evo, but i have no problem believing the STI will edge it out in a straight. well, remember that magazines have had the evo to play around with for at least a month or 2 longer. it is more broken in (engine, brakes and tires), and they just know it better than the sti. take 2 equal cars, drive on for a month or 2, test it, then hop into the other one drive it for a day, and test it.. you'll most likely do better with the 1st car.
The STI has already been decribed as tougher to learn and drive at limits than evo.. probably a big factor.

in conclusion, i'd venture to say both cars actually ran in the mid 13's, with the evo edging out the sti slightly (small enough factor that it could have simply been more gas in sti). the #' go into the formula, and pop out exceedingly low, and people start yelling ringer, and are ready to riot in the press offices.

relax, the cars are close enough that both will win and lose to each other, it'll all come down to driver, and petty things like whose more used to their own car.

Ok. Now this sounds like a MUCH more reasonable review than the MT review (in terms of numbers).

The EVO has a TINY edge in lap times. However, for me personally, the subjective feel of a car is WAY more important than the numbers, so from a purely journalistic point of view, this comparison tilts the balance slightly in favor of the EVO. Obviously, I won't really know till I drive them both.

Since the driver was Rod Millen, I would definately trust his ability to push the cars to their limits. I am really glad C&D choose a PRO to do the lap times.

This is getting really exciting and I cannot wait.
