Evo vs. STI | Anything and Everything [ALL THREADS MERGED]
Thanks a lot for all the replies. Lots of good feedback. Sounds like you can't really go wrong with either car, and they'd both be a blast to drive. I'll probably wait a while and see what happens. I'd imagine if I'm not already on a waiting list, I'd probably have to wait a year to get either of these cars at MSRP anyway.
As far as the suspension, I probably would not leave either car stock. I know it'd be hard to improve on the handling of both these cars, but I'd at least want the ride height to be a couple inches lower. I don't mind a stiff ride at all, and most people find my M3 too bone-jarring with its H&R coilovers and polyurethane mounts and bushings.
Another car I might consider is a used B5 Audi S4 Avant.
BTW, here's what our friends at the NASIOC STi forum have to say about this topic:

Oh yeah, and I really hate how you can't shift very quickly on the WRX. The center diff makes a clunk if you shift too hard. Anybody know if either the STi or the EVO are like that? I really like being able to shift fast and chirp the tires on RWD cars.
BTW, when I say shift fast, I mean let the clutch out quickly, not move the shift lever quickly.

you can't slam gears in a turbo AWD car like you can in an n/a RWD car period. You can shift *almost* as fast but it takes some practice in working both feet to stay in boost. If you just try and slam it as fast as possible like an n/a car the car will lag/bog for a rough moment and then pick up. This is my personal experience with the evo.
We should just have a an Evo VS STi thread that links to their Evo VS STi thread.
Let the hilarity ensue.
Like I felt before the Evo was released, I dunno why it's so difficult to just WAIT for the car, but hey...I guess if you want something badly enough you'd get pretty antsy over it.

The thing that gets me is how funny all this is. I used to laugh at all the "Camaro vs. Mustang" and "Viper vs. Vette" debates, and now we have a new one brewing right under our noses. I really have no preference for one over the other. I think both have their good qualities. I'm just biased toward the Evo because I just love the 4G63 and what it can do. Not that the EJ's are bad motors, I just prefer the Mitsu motor. I just laugh at all this though. Its been this way forever. The Camaro would get a win in the mags and the Mustang guys would cry foul. Then the Mustang would win, and the Camaro guys would have a hissy fit. I'm all up for brand loyalty, but just because a car loses a comparo in a mag doesn't make for a bad car. I mean, hell, the WRX was a C&D 10 Best and Automobile mag's AOTY. So, more power, more engine, better chassis refinement, and a better drivetrain surely can't make for a bad car. So what if they like the Evo better, its just a preference. I only drive black cars. Do I hate all other colors???? No, I just prefer black. I have a friend with a mildly tuned WRX and its a blast to drive. Nothing, and I mean nothing, sounds better than a big, loud, wide-open exhaust on a flat-4 turbo. That thing just sounds great. But, oh well. I'm just going to sit back and watch. All this talk on both sides is very entertaining to read. Keep it coming

We are a totally different group of followers when it comes down to it. How can people that have interests in a near identical car be so far off in similarities. Are we just better mannered?
Sheesh!
Sheesh!
Both forums have their fair share of imbeciles, and those who post constructively. Subaru owners got all excited that their STi would be the supercar of the new millenium, and now must come down to earth...

Yes i'm proud of our Evo, but I'm sure that I'll not only pass an STi on track days, but also be passed by one.
The driver will make the difference of those tenths of seconds, in every drag race, street race or track event.
There were owners of a 2003 Vette, a ZR1 vette and several Porsches that I showed Evo taillights to at my last track event, but I was passed by a couple of Mustangs and Audi's as well.
The magazines are nice, I love the press that the Evo gets, I even like seeing the STi crowd being silenced...but be prepared to be on both sides of the battle if you encounter one!

I agree, it's all still very new, and aftermarket products and tuning have yet to fully get settled. I'm hearing a lot of elitism from the Evo crowd because of the latest reviews. I'm holding my breath on most things until the STi is fully out on the road. I think in aspects the 2 cars will be neck and neck for years to come.
I just think its stupid for anyone who hasnt driven either car to make their choice, because it would be a biast one if the drove one car and said well i heard it was better than the other one.
Also, whats with the scooby thing?? scooby newbie? scooby specialist? is there something im not gettin??

ITS AMAZING TO ME HOW -
people who claim to be automobile enthusiasts rant and rave about things they HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT
HOW CAN YOU BE A EVO/SUBARU ENTHUSIASTS and not know the history of the EVO/STI battle - its almost fact that Evo is always harder/firmer/more track oriented than STI....almost fact that STI is more soft with ability to go offroad....
ALL the info from the new car magazines is OLD NEWS - if you check european magazines reviews and comparo's - its the exact same story minus the new STi's accleration/ power advantage.
HELLOOOOOOOOOOO????????
- the evo (previous and current gen.) has ALWAYS been judged as a more driver oreinted/ track oriented/ no holds barred handling machine. PEOPLE who are all about the hype WOULD NOT KNOW THIS.......
-STI's/WRX (previous and current gen.) has ALWAYS been judged as a good all around daily car with relatively "soft" handling. people who are all abot the hype would not know this as well....
SO besides acceleration, people with any brains like me
figured out months ago WHY the EVO was a better purchase (for me- crazy handling) SUBARU enthusiasts , REAL ONES, also figured this out months ago as well - they were simply waiting on a faster STI, an STI faster than the EVO - and THATS IT. NOT AN STI WITH BETTER HANDLING than the EVO, or with BETTER BRAKES than the EVO, JUST AN STI THAT WAS FASTER than the EVO.
