I was blind and stupid when looking for my next vehicle. I had no preconceptions as to what was better. I only knew that when it was all over it was going to be an EVO or an STi.

Most media chose the Evo over the STi. Most of the time it was handling in turns that was the overriding reason.

So why did I choose the STi?

The Boxer engine w/300 HP was one.
The interior styling is BIG TIME better.

And now for the biggest reason...

Mitsubishi's financial situation and its relationship to Mtsubishi's attitude to thier customers warranty repair issues.

Let the flamewars begin. But before you do....

I really like and respect the EVO

interior differences are over rated.... came from owning a subaru, and there's a negligible difference. sti is great, and youre splitting hairs if youre saying that the interior is the reason for getting it.

it's just preference.

Not really flaming here. I happen to really like the STi and am busy scheming a way to get one in the garage next to the EVO. That said:

The crap about the STi's interior being better than the EVO's is so lame. The STi's seats feel like they were made for Rosanne Bar's ***. The EVO's seats are much more comfortable. The fit and finish of the EVO's interior is comparable. I think the STi's gauge cluster is a little better and I like the shift light and boost gauge. However, the STi doesnt offer a sun roof.

Finally, the EVO just felt more fun to drive around town. Driving the EVO is like stapping on a go cart. The STi was fun too, but if felt dead in comparison.

I left out that you can get an EVO for a lot less than the STi. Enough so that you can more than make up any STi horse power advantages.

What about the 2.5L engine's history? I understand that the 2.5L is not the engine Subaru uses in their rally cars. So basically all the STi drivers are beta testers for Subaru. Hope the tuners know what they are doing. Could turn out the Mazda's 13BREW (go boom at 18PSI).

The 2.5l engine has been around, just not in STi horspower form....also it has been blueprinted, vs the EVO's stock assembly. BUT the 2.5 liter engine has never, to my knowledge, had that high of a HP number. the 4g63 will make power with certain simple mods, the STi....well.....

that 2.5 engine is used in Forrester and legacy, I think... The Forrester XT engine is something I could vouch for. It's really a good engine. It's just that it's on WRX, which doesn't make any sense.

I think they should of made the engine a lot stronger with 2.0 and boosted more, instead of measely 14psi (compare to us, of course).

Then, they could of compensated for additional engine weight and engine weights effect on the 2.0 liter suspension.

Then change the gear box, gear slots, lower and more supportive seats, wider track, etc.

Wait, EVo's already got all that for less $! What do you know...

And yes, Forrester shares the same platform as the WRX.

From: houston tx,
^^^ same engine code. The 2.5 just has more displacement. is the 2.5 reached through bore or just stroke? if its reached through bore, it could concievably be fractionally LIGHTER than the ej20... Theres no reason for the 25 to weigh more than the 20. just like the rb26 block weighs only SLIGHTLY (like... 3 lbs...) more than the rb20. and the VG33DE weighs almost identical to the VG30DE (just to use some engines from the nissan world.)

.5 liter extra displacement with 2.0 fuel and air architecture makes no sense?

I hope it's the same, because the 2.0 liter engine works better with jdm STI suspension than USDM STI's 2.5. But they handle slightly bitter in US.

...

Maybe it could be something else, like bigger fuel pump, different air intake system, blah blah blah.
