mini battery

Hey all,

New to the forum and the Evo and wrenching on cars. Just got an Evo recently and decided to a put a mini battery in it since the old battery died. Only issue is the ground wire won't reach the new battery.

Anyway, sorry for the newb question but:

Can I just buy a new ground wire from the auto parts store and connect it to where the other ground wire is attached on the drive side shock tower, or does the original ground wire that used to connect to the battery (that won't reach now) need to be attached to the negative battery terminal?

If it doesn't need to be attached to the negative battery terminal and I end up getting a new cable altogether can I just run the new ground to a good grounding area, or does it have to go where the old ground meets the shock tower.

Never really worked on cars before, but have to start somewhere I guess.

thx,

Henry

p.s. Evos are awesome. Loving mine!

I had a similar issue in the past and I just used an extension similar to the one in the link below (shorter version!).

Thanks.

Are you saying you cut your old cord and soldered in the new cord, or you just ran a new ground wire altogether, and if it was new, did you run it to where the old one meets @ the shock tower.

Sorry if I am making this more complicated than it needs to be.

if you get an extension cable then you shouldn't need to cut/soldier anything. You would just connect it thru the locking screws (male/female type of connection) and you're set!
hopefully this pic explains it.

Okay, I think I get it. The extension, you just connect it to the thru the connector of the old ground (the negative battery terminal connector)? Like the hole on the extension part just runs through the bolt on the old negative battery terminal connector? Tighten it up and done.

Unless I'm missing something

Thanks for your help DP!

Stay warm in Michigan!

p.s. silly question, but what is the small wire coming off of the battery terminal do in the product you listed?

also, what battery/kit/tray do you have?

YW!... The small wire could be an additional grounding source incase you need it (sound system...etc). For your case, you wouldn't need it nor the exact same extension I listed in the link, however, a similar one from your local auto store should do the job.

In that pic, I had the ETS mini battery kit. however, on my current evo I am running a BR setup.... they both do the job!

Right on, the local place should have one that will work just great.

Thanks for making me feel welcome to the community!

Cheers!

The short version is that the negative terminal connection should go to a good chassis ground. You can use the oem location, or use a different one-- so long as you know its a good ground, it doesn't matter. You have a few options, replace the oem ground cable with one that is long enough for your needs, or two, extending the oem one like was stated earlier. Either of these will be just fine. Its not a big deal at all so long as you are eventually securing it to a known good chassis ground.
