a stupid oil thread

I hate to ask this, but i'm having a confusing time. My car just hit 136k miles and I was told that i should with a thicker oil. I dont have the manual, I'm pretty sure that car used to use 5W30, and i'm thinking of changing it to a 10W30. Is this advised? I live in 95 degree weather, but I dont think its to extreme. I've done some searching, but cant no solid info. I even read the high mileage evo thread, but couldnt find anything thing. Thanks.

Mr. Ricer.

i run 10-30 and i am at 138k.. I tryed to run 5-30, and it was a little noisey, put in 10-30 and quieted right down. I would recommend 10-30.

At 140k here. I use to use 10w30 but after alot of reading and research i have actually switched to 5w30. Im not really sure why you would want to run thicker oil. Unless your engine was built to specific tolerances and the builder wants you to change i would stick with a 10w30 or 5w30. If you would like to do some of your own research i would recommend starting here: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

I would stick with 10W30 if you are constantly in that warm of weather

use a good quality synthetic 10w30 and you should be good to go and seeing that you live in SC theres no need to run 5w30.

BTOG is a good forum to look at for info on oil. I kinda gave up getting OCD about the oil and went with Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic 5w40. You can get it at Walmart for around $20 (large 5 qt jugs). I do a lot of daily driving so spending $60-70 for some high end oil* every time was getting old.

**definition for "high end oil" is debatable, so I use the term loosely.

I ended up doing mobile 1. That's just for now. I have some amsoil in the garage now. I didn't know if I Should have kept the old oil and go past mileage or just change it and put the new oil in 200 miles later. Haha. Some amsoil 10w30.

Oil topics like most other topic where lots of competition exist many opinions will arise.

Just pick an oil from a company that you know are transparent with the test results data. But more importantly they formulate their oil with good materials and have a high quality control standard.
