Dropping tools
Dropping tools
I was so stupid tonite. I tried to unscrew the TPS but I dropped a small wrench around that area. Spent like 2 hours finding them. Raised the car up. But still couldn't find it. Anyone has experience or suggestion on where did it go... It drove me crazy...
Thx...

My guess is probably on the subframe too, around the steering rack, also, sounds crazy, but check undernearth the intake manifold, there is a brkt attached to the block.
One time I dropped a allen wrench in my GTi, spend hours looking for it... it bounced and dropped in a hole the size of a quarter..... inside my bell housing, no joke.

^Wow that could have been bad! I dropped my EGR blockoff plate a few months back(thanks MA inspection making me do work every year
). Spent a couple hours trying to track it down around the subframe area, failed, gave up had a
and ordered a new one.

Depending how familiar you are with the car it makes finding dropped parts much easier. I can usually tell where something lands based on the sound. The hollow subframe has a distinct sound compared to everything else. There are also some natural pockets that catch parts like near the VSS and between the t-case and block.

I think I have dropped tools/nuts/bolts in every crappy place on this car, once when I had my turbo removed I dropped a nut into the downpipe :/ I was upset having to take the downpipe and the 2 bars under it off...
It may sound silly, but when working in "risky" areas like that, I like to tie a string around the tool and then around my wrist-thus is it falls you can pull it back out. Also, whenever there is space to stuff a rag underneath where I am working- I always do it.
Saved a lot of sockets, bolts and nuts that way.

This is actually a pretty smart idea thanks lol
Yeah! I dropped my Snap-on 14m swivel socket down there, couldn't find it to save my life. Fast forward six months later, as I'm swapping my clutch out, I look over and there it's sitting on the sub frame.
Lol great stories! I have 2 trusty magnetic extenders for that kind of thing. and to think I use to squeeze my hand in places I would never imagine it would fit, countless times of cursing at my self....
Now I just extend my magnet thingy and stick it down in there until I find what i'm looking for.
Good Luck!

I kept looking for it, but I still couldn't find. Like "heal2toe" said, I gave up had a beer and bought a new wrench. BTW, I didn't hear any noise at all. Probaly it dropped to the ground already.
OMG, it drove me so crazy that night...
