if BMW produces a new and more powerful M coupe, it could be very tough to beat. the old M coupe was an awesome track car.

We wish.

The S54 M Coupe is probably the last BMW I've lusted after. To bring power output back to M3 levels was trivial, and the car weighed about 500 pounds less to boot. It was perfect, except for one thing...

Most folks considered the Z3 Coupe to be hideous. I loved the look, but most of the folks in America didn't. There's what... maybe 600 M Coupes brought here? Even if Europe got a Z4 Coupe and an M version, I'd have my doubts as to whether we'd see it stateside.

The M Coupe was great. The only other car I had ridiculous respect for were the E39 325is -- swapping the suspension for the M3s was cheaper than you'd imagine, and for it's time, was a pretty capable car.

Nowadays, I just can't justify the cost of their current lineup.

I got a list ...

Rx8
G35
350z *the look has such an appeal ... plus its running from the history of the 300zx*
STi *at first I hated the thing ...but Ive grown to love it ... both are equally nice *

You could make a case for all those econo cars .... The Tc ... the 3 ... 6 ... I mean the price is gonna determine the popularity ... man if the Evo was priced at srt4 type of standards theyd be everywhere like Civics ... but I think a good thing that they're priced as they are ....

I think the challenge will rely on how they sell em... the cars that are out there are gonna ge t theirs but I think Mitsubishi for the most part is the challenge in the success of the Evo ... Sometimes I would think that there's so few out there that its fixed to keep very few of them available... o_O

the next supra will be a hybrid with two electric motors in back and a gas powered v6 in front (i believe).

the new skyline gtr is the g35 coupe (or sedan i suppose if you want to think of awd), don't get yer hopes up.

rx7? i don't believe they will go backwards in their numbering scheme, and a turbo charged renesis is the same as a 13b, cuz the renesis is the 13b just with exahust ports on the side, they'll call it an 8 turbo i'm sure.

i think none of these are rally class cars so there will be very little cross shopping and it's not too fair to comapre them. i hope they make an srt-4 awd, or a focus awd, or a matrix turbo, or anything along those lines. evo is a rally cross car, compare it to rally cross cars.

elise is an exotic mini wannabe f1 roadster, i mean it has an undercar diffuser for goodness sake.

i think the evo will give the exige a run for its money :] you guys gotta keep in mind, the evo holds almost all records in japan, it's a force to be reckoned with.

Talking EVO competitors.

I live in Europe(Belgium) and the elise is already here but its like 10000 euro's then a evo VIII
the evo is like 41k € and the elise 50k €
The evo will always have one competitor and thats the scooby. These cars are made for eachother. Without the scooby the EVO 1 wouldn't have get up to VIII. It w<ould still be a audi quattro wannabe. That suckX. We as mitsubishi fans have to be very respectfull of our fore fathers and the competitors becuz they keep us alive and we keep them alive. Without the subaru and the evo the 4 door sedan wouldnt be used in WRC anymore (except the octavia ) And no WRC for Mitsubishi would mean no street legal version either so. Bla bla bla blabla

For specs there are hundreds of competitors out there but the guys that love the evo will always love it.

Like me go mitsubishi and we want the american evo price not almost the double of it. GRRRRR

Is there anywhere I can research the upcoming 2007 crop of US cars? I'm the one that started this thread, and did so in thinking I'd be in the market for a new car about that time. I want to do the same thing I did in 2003 when I bought my Evo...make a cool little spreadsheet with all the acclaimed HP/Torque, 0-60, 1/4 mile, prices, etc.

Thanks.

shrugs... lots of things aren't solid, i mean maybe besides the new eclipse hybrid no one else is really giving up what they're gonna put up that far in the future. lots of ideas... but concrete? i mean we've all been waiting to see a new supra since 98, it's been 6 years haha.

I have to disagree with you. I'm from the theory that from competition, we breed better technology and the consumer ultimately wins through competitive pricing.

Plus, I've already got my EVO. There's tons of aftermarket toys to put in and make it a 500hp monster. I'm looking for something else.....in 2007!

motortrend seems to speculate that the '05 g35 coupe and sedan are getting a power bump of 20hp...which means that they will be at 300hp and 280hp respectively....if this is in fact the case i don't see why nissan wouldn't up the power of 350z as well.....which could in turn lead to more competition (not from a sales perspective) for the evo

The new Eclipse is not as solid as you may think...the car will NOT be a hybrid at the start and may never come that way. The basic shape is solid though. I saw the pre-production version and it is a much better looking vehicle. Similar to the last generation. On the downside it is going to be built off the galant and Endeavor chassis...meaning more weight, larger size. With the 3.8 liter out of the Galant it should have a good bit of torque but it will be much more of a grand tourer than an auto-x car.

new next skyline GTR of the USDM will eclipse the evo... it will be faster on the straight, faster on the track, single or twin turbo and impressive braking... unfortunately US will not embrace the skyline like the evo because it will cost 40k minimum..... and because it may be marketed under Infiniti, they may have to add luxury features to ruin a sportscar into a yet another sad compromise.

My primary wish is for Mitsubishi and Subaru to keep up their rivalry so we see more generations of STi and EVO here in the US.

It would be very cool if Ford would sell a version of their rally Focus here in the US. It would also be very cool if Citroen and Peugeot started selling in the US again. They make a few interesting cars that I wouldn't mind test driving.

I've also seen rumors about Dodge selling something based on the EVO. I think that would be a good thing for us. Keeps Mitsubishi in business and gets more people driving small nibble cars instead of hulking SUVs.

The most likely car to challenge the EVO in '05 - '07 is going to be an STi or something from Subaru. Yes there will be other ~5sec 0-60 (or faster) cars that cost less than $50K. But I don't see other manufactures embracing the AWD Tubro car craziness. In my opinion, if the car isn't rally inspired it is not a direct competitor. However, today there is a broad spector of competitors in the market place. For instance I considered the following cars when I was shopping:
*EVO
*STi
*Pontiac GTO (pulled like a freight trained and handled like one too)
*350z (too 'gold chain crowd' for me)
*WRX (why settle for 2nd best)
*Mini Cooper
*Mustang Mach1

Basically the STi and the EVO were more fun to drive. Ultimately the EVO won b/c the seats were more comfortable and it just felt more eager to play. I also didn't like rowing the STi's gears. I thought a 6 speed would be cool until I drove it. The EVO also felt faster. More like driving a go cart.

I wish I could convince my wife to trade her expedition in on an STi. That would rock! An EVO and an STi in the same garage.

Oh well.

Focus RS would be nice here. I think that would compete little too much with mustangs tho.

GTO's very comfy, matter of fact, it's too comfy. And for a corvette engine, it's slow.

350z is everywhere. I see one like I see camry's.

WRX, just plain ugly. And soccer mom's ride it too, and old people.

Mini Cooper. Fun little car. I actually like it a lot. I always try to race one whenever I see one. Especially the ivory with black stripped ones.

Mach 1... What can I say, it's a mustang.

You know the SRT-6 is going to be ugly for us. I think Chrysler is going to be the next great company that does well.
