I think Mr. 146 MPH Vermont speeder got the right amount of punishment.

It's just ridiculous that some people actually support jail time for something which is legal in Germany.

Frankly, I don't care what the speed offense is, but unless you either run from the cops or cause a wreck, the strongest punishment they should hand out is a license suspension. And call me radical, but that applies to DUI as well -- if you're driving drunk but nobody gets hurt because of it, jail time is a joke. I had a coworker who got jail time for a second offense of DUI. It freaked him out bigtime, but had absolutely no deterrent value -- he kept his license and kept driving drunk. A 6 month suspension of his driving privilege would have been appropriate.

i more or less agree with you- except on the drinking and driving... i think you should get nailed if you drink and drive.. it doesnt matter if someone gets hurt or not..

but speeding.. eh.... i mean.. geez thats what our cars are for.. and i just really love it how ppl on here get all stupid about speeding/racing. (like they never sped in their evo or raced it.. yea sure....)
they all of a sudden get this real serious tone and are like... omg... you sped in your evo?? you should be put to death because you raced someone and went 80 in a 55.. how could you be so stupid - you should only do this at the track.blah blah blah.

get real ppl. if you speed in your evo just be prepared to pay any fines/consequences. but dont get all stupid about it on the forums like you never did it yourself.

i personally have done 150 a few times.. and thats enuf for me. i just wanted to try it and i since i've satisfied that curiousity i dont feel need to do it again.
im just lucky i never got caught thats all.

You are kidding, right? From 146? How much do you think you could slow down to before you are in range, even with our breaks?

I'd love to try that but not on a road. As a CDL holder, if I get caught exceeding 15 MPH over the limit -- even in my personal vehicle -- I stand to loose my license for 30 days on 1st offence!

i have topped out all the cars ive owned

94 jeep grand cherokee 125 ish
70 camaro modded (4 speed 4:11) 130 ish
98 Eclipse GST (fuel cut) 140 ish
01 S2000 SC'd (with the top down) 175 ish
03 EVO VIII 155 ish
00 Ninja ZX-9R 180 ish

its not that wrong if your doing it with safty of others in mind... being that your the only one in the car and there is absolutly no other traffic on the road

and for not being able to out run the radio.... when i was doing 180 ish on my bike i passed the first cop who put his lights on and then backed back into his hiding spot and shut is lights off and then i passed 2 other cops hiding on the same highway who didnt even try to come out and get me... i didnt have a single problem with the cops that night... maybe they just knew the road was deserted and didnt care. (this was also b4 the illeged NJ law came into effect that cops couldent chase bikes going over 120mph or anybody on a bike without a helmet that was trying to run)

you could prolly do it if the cop had his radar just set to on and you had a very good detector....... Buuuuuuut i think the cop would know something was going on when you drove by him with glowing rotors

I hear ya on the speeding issue ... speeding = jail is just insane.

However taking the same attitude towards DUI is just whack, mang. I'm not gonna go into all the arguments here, since the case against DUI has been beaten to death by now. Jail time for DUI is not supposed to be a deterrent it's a punishment and for your coworker's sake and all ours, I sincerely hope he never has an accident while drunk. IMNSHO ppl like that need to be off the street. .... sorry don't mean to start any flame wars, but you managed to hit one of my hot buttons.

(don't even get me started on ppl with cell phones, hehe)

last time i want to las vegas.

i was doing 130 at the time i saw a cop who was giving a ticket to a suv. and i just hit the brake a little then let it go and the cop just saw me flow by. i saw the funny face on that cop and then just let the gas off . when i was doing like 80 on a 70. another cop showed up and pulled me over. just give me a 91 on a 70 ticket . couldn't go to treffic school for whatever reason.

but anyway . lesson learned . now i just drive what the speed limit shows .

If the speed limits were set reasonably things would be much better. Let's face it Interstates are made for rapid transportation and the speed limits should reflect that. I was not there when This guy was doing 146 but I have been at 120 several times and this car is very stable at those speeds.

What we really need to know is ... Was he tailgating??? Zigzagging through traffic??? cutting people off????

Even the NHTSA said in one of their reports (gotta find it) that speed itself is not a big factor in accidents. "Speed Differential" (I hope that is the correct term) is. If everyone on the road is doing 80 your OK when 1/2 the people are doing 90 and the other half are doing 65... Now you have a problem. Especially here where nobody respects the "Slow traffic keep right" rule. Everybody thinks it's ok to cruise in the left lane at 45. (Damn Miami alzheimer retirees)

Of that there is no doubt. I've heard horror stories about Chicago law enforcement.
