$767 is a good deal. I got a $500 fine and 30 day suspension for doing a .5 second burnout. The cop didn't even see it, a neighbor narc'd me out and I got a ticket in the mail. Kill Narc's.

Your neighbor followed you to some safe place with no one around? wow.

I never have problems doing stuff far away from folks in the boonies. Except having to crawl back around folks to filler'up to go back out for more fun..

Fight the ticket if you were wrongfully prosecuted for doing a .5 sec burnout. That's one thing (regardless of the 146mph speeding issue) we (USA) all fall short of is coming to our own defense.

That kind of speed belongs on the track and nowhere else. If a car doesn't appear from nowhere an animal may. Don't sing the song of it's only himself who's in jeopardy. BS! It's all of us in the insurance premiums we pay for cars and health. It's also the reputation everyone driving one of these cars has to live with because of fools like that fool. That fast should be forfeiture of your vehicle. That's just flat out stupid.

Not to excuse, but, I am still wondering how he was finally nabbed.
Seems like Sweeney lost him. And it was kinda fast to be getting the licence plate number.
They were already stopping othe red cars because they weren't sure ....

In NYS, you can easily beat any speeding ticket if the trooper that clocked you loses sight of you.
Once he loses eye contact, game over. But many don't know how to play that card.
And I believe the ticket was issued by NYS authorities.

Also true for speed traps in this state. If the trooper that clocked you (the one actually holding the gun)
doesn't show up to testify, you should be able to beat the ticket.

The trooper that issued the ticket doesn't count, if you are smart enough to know that.

Question - "Trooper, did you actually SEE me speeding ???"
Answer - "No."

The other trooper has to be there to corraborate the testimony.
Don't get too excited; he usually is....

All that said, it was still a reckless thing to do on a public highway.
The article could have read quite differently, like those boys in Long Island ...

in certain areas like interstate i don't believe there should be a speed limit... instead of taking all the speed limit signs down there should be a way that we (Evo owners and other high end cars alike) could legally speed a certain ammount... i have firmly believed that if someone desires to speed 5-15 mph over the legal limit then they should go through a "training" process and buy a "pass"... here's how it works:

1. you car must be selected and tested by a government sponsored agency that tests different models in ALL types of conditions. this is to ensure that your car can handle the increased speed over lengthly ammounts of time and other types of road conditions. (ex: any AMG certified Mercedes, any M series BMW, etc, etc, etc)... year of the car and also recall issues will come into play.
2. the primary driver of the car will have to undergo training by their local SCCA certified instructor. these training sessions could be annually or quarterly depending on age, state, and driving record
3. the owner of car must purchase special inspection tags. every year the car will go through a full inspection to insure perfect maintence of the vehicle by dealer or certified inspection stations (it would have to be more than a gas station)
4. the owner must purchase a special licence plate(s) and register the vehicle as an "increased speed vehicle".
5. depending on how much you pay and how you rank on the system you will be allowed to speed a certain ammount. this can change depending on wear of the vehicle, age of the driver, and driving record

Programs like the one you describe have been discussed many times by automotive writers and editors from all the major magazines. But unfortunately it will never pass in any state. The "have nots" will always whine about it and then they will say that other people are getting preferential treatment etc. And the mommy brigade will always say that if we save one life it is all worth a 45 mph speed limit on our expressways.

[begin rant]

The simple fact is that everyone should go through an extensive driving program that teaches them to watch what they are doing.

Fact: 44000 people are killed on the roads every year in this country.
Fact: 95% of these accidents could have been avoided by people opening their eyes.

In Germany it used to be (I have not been there in a long while) that to get a driver's license you had to go to school, a real school. Not Tio Mio driving academy. The driving test consisted of almost a week of going out on the roads in Germany with an instructor and proving your mettle. And this included trips to the Autobahn.

In Miami, my wife's driving test consisted of driving around a parking lot and parallel parking once. She never exceeded 15 mph on this test. And then people wonder why Miami has such incredibly high insurance rates.

My rates are $1400 every six months with no tickets and no accidents. 40+ years old and married. Come on guys, that's absurd.

What we really need is to teach all people how to drive: car control in wet and dry, following distances, use of turn signals, etc. If we did this then we could relax many restrictions that are there not to prevent accidents but to minimize the damage from them (And to generate revenue). Most importantly, teach people to be aware of their surroundings and watch the cars around them. I am so sick of people who are trying to drive, smoke, talk on their cellphones and enter appointments into their PDAs all at the same time while doing 70 on I-75 in their Ford Excursions while they are tailgating me.

Final thought: 23 years ago I was involved in an accident where I lost my left leg. I was on the back of my friends dirtbike and we were headed back to the Naval Training Center in Orlando. Someone in an oncoming lane ran the red light while making a left and t-Boned us. Neither of us was doing more than 30 mph. If there had not been a nurse at the scene I would have died of blood loss. As it is I almost did. There was no speed involved there, only stupidity on the part of the other driver. And maybe not paying attention to what he was doing.

Moral of the story. Speed does not kill... stupidity does. I would rather have a country full of smart speeders than stupid slow drivers.

[End of rant] We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming.

Good Point Scoot. It doesn't take speed to do much damage and injury or death. It just takes untrained idiots on the road. Germanys requirements for a drivers license would be a great start. I have friends who refuse to drive when they come over here form Europe becuase people are so stupid and rude on the roadways here.

[B] anyone on this board who thinks that is fast or stupid should contain their thoughts.
( I CANT STAND LIBERALS ANYWAY!) your thoughts are not true or bonifide!
I max out my evo constantly. just because I can. Its not stupid. The autobahn is not stupid and the europeans have fewer accidents than in the U.S.

Speeding isnt stupid. But messing with the popo is.

Anyway, I wasnt there, so I am in no position to judge, but if the road was as it so often is up there, completely baren, and without other cars, I really see no reason not to lay the hammer down. The only person he endangers is himself. It is no more dangerous than doing 146 on the autobahn. Obviously if there were other cars around, there is no need to be doing that.

Michael
What are you talking about, the only one he endangered was the other people who could have been on the road that night....

should

Should I make note that IF you have an accident in Germany and somebody does get hurt (other than yourself in your own car) the crap can really hit the fan? When an accident investigation actually occurs they send out basically DETECTIVES and NOT some doughnut lovin' slang talkin' highway patrolman? What does this do? It basically helps people tow the mark in their driving skills. For those that want to drive, they do it really well, and for those who don't prepare for driving that day, or take the bus!

From personal experience last year I was crusin' on my recently upgraded (suspension) TL1000S motorbike. The TLS is one of the most favored European bikes avaliable. I was on a lefty corner with oncoming traffic, and a turnout I knew about about 500 yards ahead. I ride this section all of the time! 3+ times per week. Anyways just as I banked into the corner doing WELL UNDER the 'speed' limit my whole lane turned into freshly laid cow poop from a cattle hauler that had just dumped a whole load into my lane. I had nowhere to go, not into incoming traffic, I couldn't stop, all I could do was turn my head more, get up onto my pegs, and pray my front end would hold. It didn't. I was ok (protective gear) but I was pissed. I called in a HP officer to do an accident investigation. During the whole time, he was under the premise that I WAS at fault...not the truck, not anything else...me! All of his notes in his investigation (I got a copy for my insurance) pointed to the fact that because I WAS on the road, and I was at fault. This was B.S. (literally)!

Our popos are not entirely objective in their determinations. and YES I DO support the idea of having harder training for everybody in order to get a license.

and...for that matter...getting the 'peace' officers to tow the driving mark also. They pull s@%& on the road just like everybody else.

Personally I didn't really need a driving license at 16 (rural town, 2000 people), but when I finally got my motorcycle license and took some MSF training, it was the BEST thing I ever did to my driving skills. That training allowed me the knowledge to help compensate for the US's soccer-mom-in-Excursions-talking-on-a-cellphone-tailgating-me-in-heavy-traffic-with-red-light-ahead-idiots.

Now I ALWAYS look both ways before crossing even a green light.

my friend in San Diego got pulled over doing 150 on his bike...they pulled him over at gun point because they had thought he was trying to run. it was a friday night so he had to spend two nights before he was released...bike was impounded, cost him $1000 to get it back, was fined $5000 dollars AND lost his privilege to drive for a year.

they don't f**k around in Cali...

I completely agree with you on this. I lived in Japan for 10 years and they require every driver to go to a school. I sent my wife to one, it cost me $3500, but she learned everything about driving. Including high and low speed wet driving, and skid control. They even teach them how to change a flat tire and check the engine fluids. Plus you must be at least 18 prior to going to school. I think something like this would benefit this country a lot.
I don’t have a problem with driving fast, but stupidity pisses me off.

i heard somewhere that if you ride a motorcycle in Japan you have to be able to lift your bike upright if layed down on its side...this is part of your test.

is this true?
