Oil Cooler

Hey guys...just got finished changing my oil to 15-50 mobile 1. In the SFM it states the Evo takes a total of 5.1 quarts.

Now at 4 quarts, the dipstick definately says FULL. It hit me then that the rest must be in the cooler. Anyone drain this puppy during their oil changes? If so, how.

Thanks in advance, and if I seem like a newb...its because I am

hrmm, well if your facing the hood of the car its in the lower left corner of the front fendor, you will have to take off some if not all of the under the car plastic air guide to get to it. then you'll see it.. i don't know of anyway of draining it but you'll see the input and return on it

i would assume, that it would be like a intercooler, as it would not "store oil" just have oil pass through it. i mean i'm sure a neglible amount is left in there.

Hm I wonder why the dipstick is full at 4 quarts even after running all day (filling up the filter). If I put in anymore its WAY over the full mark.

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but you are taking the dipstick out, wiping it clean, then putting it back in and reading it right?

Ok I see what the problem is. I checked the oil after a day's worth of driving. It was in the MIDDLE of the markers on the dipstick. So I am assuming that the fresh oil had a less density than oil that undergoes heat. So I put in the last quart with no worries.

My concern here guys (I may be a newb, but not stupid) was oil airation. I didn't want the pressure to be at a point where it caused problems with the engine. Thanks for the comments guys.

When I had my first oil change the tech brought it to my attention that he could only get 4 qts in the crank case. Yes is was level and yes he does know how to check the dip stick and so do I. I asked the service writer about it he told me that was all he could do for me and that I would need to get the rest of the oil pumped out but he did not offer that service. I did the next change myself and it was also 4 qts. I went with castrol synth because it is very clear while the mobile 1 isn't and I wanted to see how dark the oil would get after a short time. After what I observed (very noticible change in color right away), I think this issue may be a legitimate concern given the stress that temp and pressure put on the oil in this application. If it is part of the reason why oil change intervals are short it would seem resaonable that a drain plug in the system holding back the last qt. of oil would be worth while having. In the mean time I am using the extreme useage maint. sched.

Any professioal opinions out there (engineers, senior mech.s)?

The color of new oil has no bearing on its ability to protect your engine.

I always refill with 4.5qts myself, maybe I am letting it drain longer (~20mins) than most of you, and I always change it when it's HOT as all hell. I also put the car up on ramps so the oil drains towards the drain plug opening.

I know the filter itself holds at LEAST a 1/4qt. So having .35qts left over in the engine/oil plumbing is not a concern for me.

I'm glad I'm not nuts. I always refill with 4.25 qts, let the car sit overnight, then check the oil level again. At which point I may need to add another .25 qts. I'm a bit pissed at one of the vendors here. I was having work done on the Evo, I asked them to change the oil while they had the car--I specifically asked that they not put in more than 4.25 guarts; I even provided the oil! After I had brought the car home, I checked the oil level, it was at least .5 qts overfilled. I checked the receipt and found that I was charged for an additional quart of oil. Not right!!

Just FYI the oil cooler lines automatically drain themselves when the oil filter is taken off draining the cooler, sometimes if you do not let the cooler drain completely or if you fill your engine up with oil and check it before you start the car to pump the oil into the filter and oil cooler. It will show full at 4 qts. Secondly if you do not use the right filter that has a check valve in it to keep the oil in the cooler and not drain back into the pan it will also show full.

how much oil does it take -- 06 Evo IX

I have a IX and changed the oil twice where I watched. It has taken 5.1 quarts each time. BTW the book for to 06 Evo MR sez; 4.8 qt engine, .32 filter and .56 oil cooler. I have let it drain until it just drips every 30 seconds so I am sure it is dry and then can ony add 5.1.

So is there really no oil cooler drain?
