Who's ditching the factory stereo system?
the stock system is not up to par. i can't hear it with the front two windows down @ 60mph.
I'm going to get a new alpine hu (im just waiting for the IPOD interface)
Im going for a stealth install
MB Quart QSD 216s in the front
JL Audio 10w7 in the trunk
JL Audio 300/2
JL Audio 500/1
Alumapro 15 Farad Cap
Im going to take out the spare tire and install my amps, crossovers, and cap in there with a fan......... the only thing i want to see when i open my trunk is the 10w7 and i only thing i want to see though the windows is my headunit

Sounds like a nice install idea... JL makes awesome stuff but 500 watts isn't going to power the W7 like it should be powered, and your not ganna need that cap at all with 800 RMS watt system unless you use bad wireing.

The Pioneer N1 unit has great reviews and from what I have seen is a terrific unit but MSRP on it is about 2200 bucks I have seen it advertised online quite a bit cheaper though.
I replaced mine before I did any performance mods, but it sounds to me like none of you guys even care about performance, a jl 10w7 weighs way too freakin much to put in the trunk. I took my car to a shop and said "hey, i want this to sound way better and weigh just about the same AND have just about the same trunk space" Anyway, after 3 months of shopping around and saving up money I bought:
Alpine CDA-9835 Deck
JL Audio 650xi's in the front
JL Audio 600si's in the rear
JL Audio 4300e 4-channel amp for the speakers
JL Audio e1400D amp for the sub
1 JL Audio 12w3v2
a whole buncha dynamat (rattle is for ricers)
and the Alpine KCA-420i to play my iPod in the car (works great)
This was all installed in a custom fiberglass enclosure in the spare tire well, taking up just an extra 1-2 inches in some places of the trunk, and I have guys in big trucks who get pissed at how much better it sounds then their giant system. And overall it weighs a measly 40 lbs more than the car does with the spare tire in (which pretty much just gives the rear-end a bit better grip)
If anyone wants to see some pictures of what it looks like I could show you, and if anyone is in the Salt Lake area of Utah, I could let you listen even. PM me or post on here again, whatever.

I upgraded my system after I got the full turboback exhaust because I couldn't hear it over the exhaust!
Eclipse 3434 headunit
Focal Polyglass 6.5" components in front doors
PG 12" Carbon Fiber Sub (used from a friend) was the top of the line a couple years back
Zapco 4 channel amp - 2 power the front components, the other two are bridged for the sub
factory rear speaker powered off of head unit for a little fill (maybe upgrade later if I care)
I think it sounds amazing for the money that I spent (about $1000 installed)

I tested the W7 with a 500 watt amp then a 1000 watt amp and there was a huge difference in sound it wasn't just about the bass levels either when you underpower a sub it doesn't perform like it should it looses not only the db levels but also the sound quality and sharp action it should have. I like you am over the whole "how loud can I make my car" thing I did that in high school and now I'm about a good clean sounding system JL subs are the best I have ever heard and even underpowered they still sound better than most other subs around (my opinion) but if you give that bad boy the 1000 watts it wants I guarentee you will be even happier with that sub.
[QUOTE=gtr]I finally realize that I need to redo the stereo after 600 MI
