Yap the stock system sounds like a**!! I dunno why Mitsu even bothered to put it in.

Here's what I'm thinking of replacing it with:
Alpine 9827 Head Unit (blue, not green ... wohoo!)
Infinity Kappa 60.5 CS in the front
Infinity Kappa 63.5 in the rear
Infinity Basslink Sub

What do you guys think? I can get all of this off eBay for ~$700. I'm also getting Craighardy's gauge panel, so the Alpine will be relocated to the lower bin.

Hopefully this make it go from to

Wow, people are reviving old threads a lot today!

Gimme a break, you don't know why they even bothered to put it in?

Its an okay setup, its not complete junk, and hey, at least its factory installed unlike another rally car.

I yanked that stock crap out the day after I bought the car. You would not believe how cheap those stock speakers are. I could take one and throw it at you with all my might, and not even hurt you. Anyway, here's what I went with. (I'm not going to be particular about making sure the model numbers or spelling is right)

Alpine IDVD300 head unit
Alpine 6-disk CD changer
Apple i-Pod with dock and moster audio connection to aux-in on h/u interface box
Soundstream D'Artagnan 6-channel amp.
Kicker L7-12 solobaric ported sub box (500w@1ohm from amp)
Diamond Audio 6.5" Seperates up front (65w@4ohm from amp)
Diamond Audio 6.5" coaxles in back (65w@4ohm from amp)
1 farad cap

That's pretty much it. Sure the box is a bit heavy, but I don't run a spare, and that makes up for quite a bit of the weight. When I go to the track, I just yank the single connection from the amp to sub box, remove the box, switch the high-pass crossovers out on four channels of the amp (easy to do since the switches are right on top of the amp), and yank the RCA input from the h/u to channel 6 of the amp (sub channel). It takes no more than 2 minutes to do all of this, and the stereo sound better than stock with only minimal extra weight from the amp and weight difference between the Diamonds and the stock speakers. BTW, incase anyone asks, I don't run channel 5 of the amp because I don't want to cut my dash up just to stick in a center channel. I'm not THAT into the DVD in the car thing to go that far.

HU: pioneer anvc1/dvd/cd/6.5 screen /navigation/rear camera option
Sub: eclipse titanium 12" in custon fiberglass ported box
Amp: jl 500/5
Fronts: Mb quartz speakers

System sounds nice, but was expensive. Yes I am lazy and paid for install also.

I have a Kenwood Excelon head unit with Boston Acoustics 6.5" component set powered by a Rockford Fosgate 120.A and a 10" Boston Acoustics sub powered by a Rockford Fosgate 360.A all cleaned by a Monster Power Cap...everything but the deck is currently collecting dust in my closet because I am too lazy to install it all. It's too hot in AZ right now...

I finished my system out with:
Deck:
Eclipse 55060 deck with 3 preouts all measured a true 8v with only 55ohm of impedance best sounding deck I have ever heard cept maybe the alpine F1 but heck thats a $4,000 head unit
Speakers:
Focal speakers all the way around components in front and coaxials in rear custom install job to fit the 6.5 inch all around.
Wires:
All top of the line JL audio
Subs:
I got 3 ten inch JL audio W3's in a custom box with custom install job with oval patern around the subs in two tone grey/black carpet.
Amps:
you guessed it JL audio 300 watt 4 way amp for the speakers (actually outputs about 360 due to the wireing) and JL 500 watt (outputs about 600) to the subs measured the system and it draws just shy of 1000 watts true RMS power totally clean.

Summery: This system outputs way more and way better sound than my old 2000 watt RF sound system. The sound is way cleaner crisper and overall just a totally different league.

Retail MSRP on system $5,000

I'm not sure about "optimum" bass, but I'm pretty happy with my Infinity Kappa speakers (front and rear). I also used dynomat just around the speakers and on the edges of the door panels to reduce any buzz. Like I said, I'm pretty happy with the results ... bass is much better than before and overall sound quality is waay above the stockers. Haven't put in a sub yet, although I have an Infinity Basslink waiting in the wings.

I'm looking for someone with a 2004 Evo that bought the optional sound system that wants to sell their head unit. PM me if you do, thanks.
