Nope, it\'s a decent radio. I rather put $ in mods.

Who's ditching the factory stereo system?
That's a good budget. You should have lots of options in that price range.
If you're willing to go with components, I just picked up a pair of CDT HD62-ef (the new Euro Frame) components for $225 shipped. That would allow you another $75 for install. There's a group buy setting up over at http://www.elitecaraudio.com if you're interested in that. The CDT's tend to be smoother (less harsh) than most with a great slammin midrange. I like smooth at high volume, so I bought CDT.
If you like briter sound, try the following: Focal 165-series, MB Quart. These were both very good in the mids but a bit too sharp for me in the tweet.
Also very popular are Infinity speakers and Diamond makes good speakers too. Listen to a bunch and see what you like.
If you go with Coaxials, you would probably need to find the stock crossover and run new wire from the head unit directly to your speaker, or you probably won't get any high freq to the coaxials. If you buy your own components, they should come with their own crossovers, and you can probably mount the new tweeters in the stock location (plenty of room in there).
Good luck in the search!

If I went components I am assuming the a pillar tweeter would be replaced also? If that were the case would I have to run new wires from the new crossover to the apillar. I like the idea of components but do not wish to run new wires.
Also, what brand is CMT?

You wouldn't have to run new wires to the pillar if you use the existing whire harness and the existing crossover. You'll get much better sound if you run new wiring. I'm probably going to mount my crossovers on the kick panel high up under the dash, so it shouldn't be too tough to get wires up into the pillar from there.
CDT's website can be found here: http://www.cdtaudio.com
I have a contact right now that can get you the HD-62ef components for $225 shipped (normal price is about $349, I believe). Not sure if the deal is still good, but let me know if interested.
BTW, it appears that the door in the Evo is only about 2 1/4" deep, so if you get anything deeper, you'll need to make a spacer out of MDF. You can do this with an inexpensive jigsaw.
Hope this helps,
John G

I installed the MB Quart front component speakers, Boston Accoustic 2 way in the rear, JL Audio 300/4 amp and a Alpine H/U.
Sounds Great! even without the Sub installed.
I recommend replacing the tweeters right where they are. It's easy and yes I ran new wire since the MB Quart come with their own high quality crossovers. That is the best position to get the high freq. sound from.

John G, yes I am interested. Please PM me with the details. Can you help me with the installation (ie wiring for the crossovers) or should I take the set and get professionally installed.
I am going to stick with the stock headunit.
Thanks

The stereo system sucks!
I will put my money into the stereo and then into mods.
I will not mod this motor till I get a few thousand on it and wait to see if any recall crap comes up first.
You will lose your warranty modding this car and I prefer to wait a bit with a first year car so I do not have to remove things.
Besides, It's a $30 K car. If I was to put more than $5 K in engine mods I might as well go get a ZO6 vette.

save weight AND replace stock speakers with the audiobahn neodymium speakers, an 6000 shallow mount.

can someone list the speakers we have in the evo one by one? i know theres speakers in the rear deck, on driver and passenger side, and tweeter-like speakers on two sides near the front windshield...is that it? what sizes fit? ONLY 6 3/4"? b/c most online places i c only sale 6.5"?
also...if i have a budget of $500...what would you guys recommend me with the following considerations:
1. I want a HU (w/ mp3 playback if possible).
2. I want decent bass but no amp or sub...so just speakers...saves weight.
3. Clarity in combo with power.
4. Light weight (if possible)
oh yea...when dealers sale "component speakers"...what exactly is the difference b/t that and regular speakers?
im pretty clueless when it comes to audio systems...
thanks!
