This is the prefect thread for what I need! There are a couple of spots on my car (the right rear door handle and the top of the rear bumper) that have a strange look to them and feel somewhat coarse almost. The spots look like they don't have any clear coat on them... but when I run my hand across the rear bumper it goes from very shiny clear-coated smoothness to this dull looking somewhat rough feeling blah. Same thing on my door handle.

Now this is a new car and when I picked it up it was in the rain (bad idea) but it was so far north that we didn't have much choice. Anyway, it ended up having a couple of dents in it and we had to tell them to fix it, which they did, so the right rear quarter-panel was resprayed.

Could these two areas be overspray by any chance or is it something else? Im pretty sure the spots weren't like that before. And you can only see how it looks kind of dull (almost like someone with dirty hands touched it) when it's in the sun. So of course we couldn't see it until we got it home... again. Arg.

Any suggestions? If I am able to take care of it myself I would MUCH rather do that seeing as how these people are obviously asswipes. Thanks in advance.

Oh and if you need pictures to better determine what it may be lemme know and I'll try to snap some shots.

Sounds to me like it has got to be overspray from the quarter getting re-shot. Also its hard to say without pics or anything, but it being a new car??? I would have to say its overspray, also with the location of it too. Take it back to the shop to have them tell you exactly what it is, and have them fix it accordingly. I know you think they are asswipes, but give them a chance to fix it.

If you would like to try to fix it yourself, go get yourself some 3M polish(maybe even some 3M perfect it compound too, but its not totally needed) and hand polish it off. This will tell you right away if its overspray or not. It might take a lil time and some elbow grease, but polish or hand glaze should get it off. If you have trouble with the polish, break out the compound, and see if it comes off then. BUT remember after you use compound YOU HAVE TO GO BACK OVER IT with some kind of polish. DO NOT use a buffer on that door handle, or you will burn the crap out of it, it is ok to use it on the rear bumper.

EDIT***
I always forget to meantion this method, so here goes. Get a claybar if you do not want to go the polish and compound route. Claybars are EXCELLENT when it comes to removing overspray or just any gunk or build up on your finish. You can get them at any auto store or any paint store. Also with the claybar you do not have to repolish or anything, just get a squirt bottle and a claybar and go to town. ITS IDIOT PROOF. Try that as well and if its overspray the claybar will get it off.

If its not overspray have that shop or the dealer fix it. If you would like to post some pics I would be able to tell you what it is a lil better, but I am saying its overspray for now. Good luck and hit me up if you need any more help. Later

Josh

Well I already tried the clay bar before I posted because I had it in my garage and so I thought if it was just some dirty fingerprints it would come off with that for sure. The clay bar seemed to smooth it out a bit more, so maybe it just requires that 3M polish or compound to really get it off? I hope so...

If I can get it to show up in some pics then I'll definitely post em up, but I dunno how easy it will be to get it to show in them.

Hey Ray, thats a cool color if its the one green from the old superbirds. Now as far as cost wise goes, its really tough to say, but let me give you some good references. Depending on how high quality you want to go with the materials, you are looking at anywhere from 1500 to 2000 just in materials. The labor just for the work? I would charge around 1500 for a complete color change inside and out, and you pay for all the materials.

Now if you have some dents and repair work it would go up a lil. Now this price would be for a very high quality paint job, complete with extra coats of clear for that deep luster and shine. The process would be like this, prep your car for paint, remove the decklid and the doors, so that I can spray the jambs WHILE I am spraying the quarters( no tape lines), spray the color, then spray the first 3 coats of clear. Let it bake, then colorsand it FLAT, bake it at least one more time(but I would prolly go twice). then completely wash it and retape it back up, put it back in the booth and spray 2 to 3 more coats of clear and repeat colorsanding and buffing. That my friend is how you get a showcar finish.

Thats how much I would do all of that for, if you were looking for more of a really nice daily driver finish, I would skip the extra clear and removing the decklid and doors and do a production job(like I do everyday in the shop I work at) for around 1000 in labor and you pay the materials. Hope this helps you Ray, and if you get quoted some BS hit me up if you need any help with questions. Later

Josh
