QFT!! Such a shame....I'm looking for US Spec parts just so I can attempt to squeek my Evo IV back into America without having to cut it in half to sneak by customs .

Unfortunately the Evo IV's are prone to crankwalk as they are 6-Bolts; rumor has it ALL 4G63's from 96-98 were built in America, even the ones used in Japan. I have no idea how true that is, but I do know they are crankwalk prone, but its 2010 and there are 1000hp 6/7 Bolts now-a-days w/many ways to prevent it. A little research and preventative maintenance can go a long way and he has a one up as the engine is currently out of the vehicle.

The worst thing about the situation if you check the UK ebay and the Japanese Auctions the Evo IV CN9A engines are so abundantly for sale so cheap because of most of them on their last leg for whatever reasons and they're beat to hell. I honestly would have saved for the 8 block or AT LEAST just rip that thing apart now just to save for any headaches you may approach, I know you can probably pull that engine quickly but hey you've done such a great build so far when it comes to the "bread and butter" of the transformation you gotta "do it right or do it twice," it'd probably save you tons in the end. At least check the crank pulley for movement....After seeing first hand how they are in Japan aka "This engine is almost done, let's sell it on the auction before it blows," I can never buy another used engine w/o absolutely trusting the source or taking it apart.

So ironic though, your building the car to JDM standards and I'm looking for ways to get the IV back under the radar and I'm thinking I might use a junkyard Mirage and grab the hood, doors, few other parts just to have the EPA; DOT stickers "on the vehicle," the VIN # could be an issue but my thing is if the car has an American counterpart, I feel I should be able to go off of the crash ratings and safety standards of the Mirage. Oh well, I have to figure something out in the next two years, I'd dread bringing her back in pieces .

Great build man!! Definitely one of a kind with true passion and dedication behind it, your on the final stretch to something spectacular. It should be everything you imagine, I personally love the older Evo's a little more than the modern day ones and thank God Mistu never was like Honda w/a bazillion engines/transmission and kept the Evo's relatively similar from 3-9! Biggest thing to remember is go with a 5/6/7 or 8 260 ECU, the Evo IV ECU cannot be flashed. They hold strong to about 1.2 Bar of boost and 340bhp.

lancerregister.com & evoowners.co.uk have a plethora of info on the previous model Evo's.

IDK man, I think the E4's just got a bad rap from the internet. I did a lot of research on these blocks, and it looks like most people were running clutches with high clamp loads, and weren't as up on maintenance as they should've been.

The block seems pretty damn strong to me- I bored/ honed my E4 block with a torque plate and honestly it distorted .00015" at the top of cyl 4 after it was removed! That was with a torque plate and ARP head studs- so they seem to be pretty geometrically stable. Well find out when run it tho, i guess as im looking to make around 400 atw...

Anyway- BCSpeed, seriously call Carlos and he will replace all the parts that got damaged in shipping on your motor for free!!!

All evo engines are 7-bolt.

And it's not just the evo4 engines that suffer from crankwalk its also evo1-3 engines too as they share the same thrust bearing design which was changed on the evo5.

Sorry for the minor hijack, but can you please post up a new thread with pics of your car? Must be complete eye-candy a '99 VI RS.

I´m happy that you have the engine
Just was it (after shipping, taxes etc) cheaper than Evo8 you can get in US from braker?
