Evo 8 Winter Setup
Evo 8 Winter Setup
I'm going to be moving to MD soon (from Cali) and am curious about the winter wheel setups. I've been doing reading and have seen that sizing down is the recommended option, so would moving down to a 225/45/17 be the best option for that? Also, would the stock wheels be too wide for that or would I be fine with them? I'm pretty anxious to get into some snow, it's been quite some time!

I live in Hagerstown Maryland and love the winters up here i go with 245 40 17 I found they were the best for winter we had three big snows storms here last year ended up being 4 feet in a week and i drove to work everyday and made it there fine also i plowed two feet of snow with my intercooler and front bumper haha you'll love it

This will be my first winter with the evo, I'm running (getting installed as I type) continental dws tires in 245/45r17 on 17x8.5 gramlites. I figured the 245/45 would give me slightly more clearance/rim protection than a 245/40.
I'm in wa so I'm not especially worried about tons of snow.
I also just installed rally armor this morning, these flaps look seriously sharp.

Well bro when you said 245 45 i went out and looked and thats what mine is 245 45 17 and once my girlfriend gets out of law school we planned on moving up there because of winter i thought it snowed in wash a lot ? the reason i want to live up there is im bringing my bob cat up and making a half mile long rally track
and want to be away from the city type so i can go out at 3 in the morning and blast with no cops to worry about

I spent a while looking around at different sizes, months. I knew I was going to want winter tires so I started looking early and took my time. Surprisingly the tire price and selection can change drastically with a small change in tire size in the search. I found the best prices and selection when I looked last year in 225/45/17. 245/40 is okay but why would you want to go wider than stock for the winter? Wider is not good in the snow and ice. If you don't want to downsize just go stock size. Then your speedo will be accurate. Actually more sidewall performs better in the rough stuff, but I didn't want to have to look at it. I considered 215/50. It's very close to stock diameter and can stretch on an 8" wheel if you want to but it's about the limit.

i live in MD near baltimore ... I used a set of 235/45r17s last season I think they are coopers. anyways it was a good investment. I had it out in the blizzard last year. I only parked it because 8 inches of snow the floorboards were taking a beating. hands down the best time Ive ever had in the snow.
Where in MD? Dedicated snows are very nice to have IMO west of the blue ridge, but any halfway decent all-season is fine for the rest of the state. When we get enough snow that you actually need snow tires, the state basically shuts down and you don't need to do anything except build snowmen and drink beer. A day or two later the roads are mostly fine.
