Evo 8 Winter Setup

I'm going to be moving to MD soon (from Cali) and am curious about the winter wheel setups. I've been doing reading and have seen that sizing down is the recommended option, so would moving down to a 225/45/17 be the best option for that? Also, would the stock wheels be too wide for that or would I be fine with them? I'm pretty anxious to get into some snow, it's been quite some time!

You don't need to size down but there's no harm in running that size on the stock wheel. Infinite threads on this.

ok, I ran through the search for about 30 minutes or so and found a little bit of info, but nothing really answering my question.

What kind of winter weather are we talking about? Is there a lot of ice/snow like we have in Upstate, NY, or is it mostly a matter for freezing temps?

This will be my first winter with the evo, I'm running (getting installed as I type) continental dws tires in 245/45r17 on 17x8.5 gramlites. I figured the 245/45 would give me slightly more clearance/rim protection than a 245/40.

I'm in wa so I'm not especially worried about tons of snow.

I also just installed rally armor this morning, these flaps look seriously sharp.

I spent a while looking around at different sizes, months. I knew I was going to want winter tires so I started looking early and took my time. Surprisingly the tire price and selection can change drastically with a small change in tire size in the search. I found the best prices and selection when I looked last year in 225/45/17. 245/40 is okay but why would you want to go wider than stock for the winter? Wider is not good in the snow and ice. If you don't want to downsize just go stock size. Then your speedo will be accurate. Actually more sidewall performs better in the rough stuff, but I didn't want to have to look at it. I considered 215/50. It's very close to stock diameter and can stretch on an 8" wheel if you want to but it's about the limit.

Not a lot of snow all winter west of the cascades. Once or twice a year it will "dump" and everyone flips out, it's mostly just that the state/county/city are not used to dealing with snow. East of the cascades it snows a good bit, but they know how to take care of it.

245/45 means the speedo is exactly on, two performance awards prove this. 8.5 wide wheel so stock 235 is stretched. And living in wa I'm more worried about snow, slush, packed snow than trying to "cut" through loose snow with a narrower tire. If I wanted that why not go with a 6-7" wide wheel and 195 or 205 or possibly even narrower?

i live in MD near baltimore ... I used a set of 235/45r17s last season I think they are coopers. anyways it was a good investment. I had it out in the blizzard last year. I only parked it because 8 inches of snow the floorboards were taking a beating. hands down the best time Ive ever had in the snow.

Where in MD? Dedicated snows are very nice to have IMO west of the blue ridge, but any halfway decent all-season is fine for the rest of the state. When we get enough snow that you actually need snow tires, the state basically shuts down and you don't need to do anything except build snowmen and drink beer. A day or two later the roads are mostly fine.
