They are usually where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. I haven't changed one on an Evo X yet. That's where they are on every other car I have changed them.

Why do you want to change the thermostat? There is nothing wrong with the temperature the factory thermostat is set to. If you are having a problem with the engine not cooling, it is not going to be the thermostats fault unless it has failed.

I have to agree, the factory opens at 176* F or so which is perfect operating temp for power and still relatively cool. Assuming your cooling system has the capacity it should be able to hold it at that temperature assuming proper airflow while the engine is running and flowing coolant through the water pump. Opening the thermostat for flow earlier will initially run the car cooler but then heat up past that after the cooling capacity of the radiator is overun just as before.

If your car takes longer to reach normal temps it will run in your warmup maps for many functions limiting Mivec settings, boost, and timing. You are best off actually increasing the cooling capacity with a larger radiator, water wetter additive, and proper airflow through the radiator via fans and ducting. You want to quickly reach proper operating temps and then hold there consistantly.
