The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
My 2015 is notchy in 2nd and 3rd. I've also had to go from 2nd to 1st at a stop to get 1st to engage. However this is normal. Sometimes things don't quite line up when at a stop and you may need to engage a different gear to engage 1st cleanly. I've owned many mustangs (t-5, t-45, t-56) transmissions and they were all like this. Remember the synchro's are doing a lot of work to get things spinning so the dog teeth don't grind.
Please keep in mind, the transmission gears aren't what's grinding, but the dog teeth that engage the shafts that the gears are on. Sometimes those dog teeth aren't quite lined up. This is why different fluids sometimes help the synchros and their friction properties. Be wary of using non OEM recommended fluild as it may prematurely wear the friction material on the synchro.
If I shift slowly, no grind. However that can make driving less 'smooth' and needing to blip the throttle to bring the rpms back up before releasing the clutch. That seems to have helped me and at high rpms I have no grind or notchiness. Only at low rpm's and mostly when its cold.
I will likely be ordering the Works Shifter and bushing kit just to see if that improves things even a little.

I just installed my Works shifter last night. Didn't even bother with the bushings and wow what a difference. Still notchy sometimes but i haven't had a grind in 2nd or 3rd yet.
odd that a shfiter would make this change but it has helped for me.
install was a breeze. took me maybe 45 min and I was taking my sweet time.

Yeah some people say replacing the shifter may help. I know 1st into 2nd is annoying and I've notice it more when im first driving, after awhile it goes away. so maybe the fluid needs to warm up, idk but it is annoying haha.
Ugh Ive adjusted the clutch pedal but still no luck getting rid of the grind into 2nd. It only reacts this way when I'm taking off hard...I nearly always miss second and boy does it sound bad; 8500 rpms and grind. Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? I have an after market short throw shifter and all the bushings installed too. About 50k on a possible stock clutch.

Well I had to take my GSR in because 4th gear kept popping out in boost. so ill be driving normal and if I wanted to accelerate in 4th it would just pop into N and I would be revving. So they were going to rebuild it but Mitsu sent them a trans to swap in. this actually got rid of my issue of both the gear popping out and the trouble of shifting into 2nd and back down into 1st. The trans feels like it should, nice and smooth. I either had to double clutch or almost force it in gently to go into 2nd quick, now its just driving normal.
I am notchy from 1-2, and grinds from 2-3.
2014 with only 13,000 miles on it and I have NEVER abused the car.
This is ridiculous that the X has been out for 7 years and every single year has transmission problems. I don't know why Mitsu isn't doing anything about this especially when (im pretty damn sure) they saw this thread + all the complaints going to them.
One assumption is that in order for them to do anything to solve this problem, they would have to recall EVERY SINGLE EVO out there from 2008 and up who have a problem and fix the transmissions on their own expense.
This would probably make them bankrupt so that's why they are dodging the problem and pushing it aside, and having their reps say that its "normal".
35k car with a ****ty interior, a small *** trunk, a ****ty sound system, **** rattling everywhere, and we cant even have a transmission without issues. ffs sometimes I want to drive the car into all wall and go buy an STI.

I'm thinking about getting a SS clutch line. I'm wondering if this might help? It seems if I shift extremely quick I'm less likely to have problems, so I'm wondering if the old rubber lines are attributing to the problem?
I've had my 15 GSR for about 6 weeks now putting 2100 miles on it.
In the morning, whether it's cold outside (NJ) or not, gears are hard to get into. 3rd gear is usually the least recalcitrant of the forward gears. Reverse is impossible. When it was brand new, I would sit there and idle for 5 minutes to let things warm up, rock forward a bit and roll back to see if that would help engagement of other gears. It pretty much just took time. Once I got going and after a 10 minute highway drive and some local traffic, the trans was relatively smooth. I often skip gears when I am going nowhere particularly fast 1,3,4,5 or 1,3,5 depending on traffic. Note that I don't lug or do high throttle from low-speed and high-gears. The weather has been warm the last week or so here in NJ being in the 50s and 60s. The trans has been much, much better. I do think that outside of temperture improvements to things, that the trans has either "broken in" some or I have become much more attuned to its idiosyncrasies and needs. In one sense it's like a speed limiter until the car is warmed up which I guess I can live with. That's one reason why I skip second until fully warmed... I don't need to have 2nd unavailable when I need it in traffic - or, have to jam it in. I'd rather drive like it's not there. Until I know 100 % its available to use. The subsequent starts in the day are much easier.
When I do my little rocking regimen in whatever forward gear is available, I have recently noticed that if I try to get into reverse when I'm rolling back the tiniest amount it's much easier to slot in. Throughout all of this If the gate seems closed, I don't force anything. This all sounds bad, but it's not really. It's only getting moving in the initial morning start and then a 10 minutes until everything warms up. I don't grab boost until everything is fully warmed up anyway. I feel like it's made me a better gear shifter because I am concentrating hard sometimes.

The second part I'll say it does not bother me at all. I feel like the interior is about what I expect for a car that is otherwise as focused as it is on driving. If they still had stripper models available, I'd have stripped most of what they would let me. Then again, I drove a Miata 94 R with no ac and hand crank windows so the 2015 GSR both rides better and is much more comfortable than that.
I think in my first 2100 miles I had maybe 3-4 mini grinds of gears. I avoid all possibilities of grinds by avoiding possibly unavailable gears until I am completely warm. It's a great trans then.

2003-2004 they had a wide spread synchro problem, and they solved it.
its not a piano, you know...
The late 8, and the 9 showed how good and sturdy tje 5 speed is.
The X took it at least a notch up.
Absolutely great honest (very direct) , and quick syncronized transmission. one of the best in this class and type of these tranny's. Other plus is the fact its cable driven, so it is very easy to relocate the whole shifter assembly.
Period.

I've had my car for almost 2 months now. I followed Kracka's Evo build, and studied how he got rid of his grinding/notchiness. I picked up a WORKS short shifter, didn't seem to help all too much. It made shifting 1000 times easier but grinding definitely still there. The next thing I picked up were WORKS under hood bushings and console bushings. What this did was made the gear changes less rubbery. It got rid of the over dampness of the gear changes. But what really made the difference was installing the AMS gate selector bushing, I lubed it up with silicone spray, after a couple of laps around the block shifting was easy. No more grinding. The notchiness comes back for a few seconds in the mornings, but really non-existent.
I was frustrated early on too. My heart sank into disappointment every time i heard a grind. I just went out to do something about it besides rage.
