Evo X MR, can u upgrade the clutch?

Hello, coming from the m3 world, its common for turbo/supercharged m3s to simply swap clutch/flywheels to handle the horsepower on their SMG trans(auto)..

Is it going to be possible to upgrade the clutch/flywheels for more power on the MR?

I might be looking into a X MR, if the new MR trans can handle 500+RWHP with the proper clutch of course...

Thanks, Travis

Certainly not anytime soon, but maybe eventually. There are companies that offer clutch upgrades for VW's DSG, for instance. It is a very expensive upgrade.

On the other hand, not even Mitsubishi is willing to let anyone dig around in there. The TC-SST is marked as an unservicable part. If anything is wrong with it, the dealer is instructed to replace the whole thing as a unit. This could prove troublesome as there won't be a shop manual guiding disassembly. It will probably take someone willing to ruin the expensive transmission in order to find out how it's done.

Right now we have no idea how much power the MR can handle, but with a goal of that kind of power I'd be concerned at this point. There are a lot of unknowns. Personally, I would stick with a GSR so you know for certain you can make the required upgrades.

The restriction on overhauling the SST will be lifted after one year. That was a stipulation in the contract that Getrag wanted. I don't know when this one year limitation starts/started. It could be from the beginning of MR production, or possibly after the MR is available to the public.

I wasn't aware of that. Certainly good news for those that'll inevitably want to upgrade parts of it.

Im sure most of you guys on here know kevinD. He is the DFW area tuner.
On the 15th of Dec. he will be back from his honeymoon, in Costa Rica. I am dropping the car off with him to install and tune a crap-ton of parts.
Here is my mod list, good for well over 400 hp and 400 tq

EvoX Forced Performance Red turbo-62lb per min
880cc inj.
HFS-5 methanol injection
ETS full pipe system; upper/lower icp, intercooler and intake
Ultimate Racing Full turbo-back exhaust
And Cosworth 280/280 cams

It is an 08' MR SST, so it should be interesting to find the limits of the stock MR tranny.
I will create a post with the Hp and Tq numbers and of problems (there will be problems)

On topic, there are no aftermarket clutches available yet, however we'll be speaking with some head honchos from Japan on the 11th regarding what is on the horizon.

Last year we found a $5,000.00 add on MIVEC kit for 2003-2005 Evo 8 from HKS>

We'll see what this year brings.

And the problem with over heating can be helped by placing a 10'' Spa fan directly behind the tranny and splicing the cut-on/off wires into the dual fan located behind the radiator. Ill take some pics of this to help if needed.

Not one part in the NEW MR is set to be changed out so the new MR holding 500tq may be out the question for a this coming production year . One of my close friends that just happens to be an engineer for mitsubishi is working out a deal for us to get an MR tranny if that does not happen we'll jsut buy an MR to test . The clutch can and WILL be upgraded in the not too distant future , its just a matter of us getting our hands on a tranny of OUR own or someone else we know of thats working on this issue .

very exciting times indeed. Will be interesting to see what the cost of such an upgrade would be. I'm sure installation costs would be $$
