Yeah I think mines smoothed out a bit...it still gets notchy sometimes but hopefully when I install my Works Short shifter and ams bushings things will be a little better.
mine is still SUPER notchy on 1-2 and 2-3 shifts when cold, and pretty notchy when warmed up. it seems to be pretty random... sometimes it wont be, sometimes itll do it one time per drive, sometimes all the time.
id say it has improved about 25% since i got the car. i currently have 1400 miles on it

Weird, I think Mitsubishi should consider outsourcing a company to build transmissions for them.
Maybe during assembly someone was like, hrmm this one doesnt look right, oh well might be a little notchy.

Tis in the design of the synchros.
Mine's gotten better but for "fun" when I knew warranty would cover anything stupid (til I read it REALLY was a glitchy issue), I played around with shift speeds, knowing that in typical FWD transaxle designs, if you tried to massively downshift into 2rd or 3rd, our problematic gears, you'd get grind in most trannies. That's because the design of the synchro isn't that hearty, its mainly to help shift grandma from slow to not-as-slow.
Our beasts are wild -- try shifting down straight into 2nd from speeds near 60 or 80mph. Smoother than shifting upward by far. Crazy, sort of weird from an engineering POV, but I s'posed that I am just an inadequate driver, incapable of a proper heel-toe three pedal technique. True. Can't do it.
But if I did/could do it, this tranny would never get glitchy again. Trees might silent it, but not make it glitchy. ;-)

i changed my tranny fluid 2 days after i got the car with some cocktail mix by Speed Element and it's WAY better now. It might still OCCASIONALLY a bit notchy on 1st and 2nd. but nothing like before now...
very happy...
by reading this thread, I think it'll only get better anyway...

Just over 6k miles and still notchy, but it's mildly better. I have just adapted my shifitng technique to give it what it wants. If it makes anyone feel better, the new RUF CTR3 with 700 hp (which costs mid 600k) has a notably rough tranny that sounds even worse than the X. The article in Road and Track said that if gears aren't selected very firmly that it crunches and howls at you, much like the X's tranny. I've noticed since day one that if you shift the gears with a little force that they drop in just fine. It's when you shift at a more liesurely rate that it crunches. It just goes with the territory I suppose; beefy trannies that are meant for serious abuse are a little rough but you just get used to it.
