****clutch is gone**** need serious advice
I've read in these forums that the rear main seal has gone out on a few Evos. I wonder if you're having the same problem. If so, that would cause your clutch to slip and it'll be covered by warranty.
If your clutch is out at 6k miles and you haven't modded it, you should be covered. I would ask for a mitsu rep to come out and make a ruling on it. How do you know the guy who test drove the Evo before you didn't beat the **** out of it and cause pre-mature wear. Now you are stuck paying the bill? Typical mitsu dealer, they won't cover anything and just blame the driver for abuse.
Do you think this is normal for any other brand? How do build brand loyalty when you treat your best customers like crap? I bet if my clutch was screwed on my 2.0T Jetta that I would get it replaced under warranty at 6k miles.
Lastly, why the hell are you paying $1800 for a clutch job? Down south the going rate is around $500 labor. Is the Evo X THAT MUCH harder to do then an VIII or IX (which is legendary for being a PITA). Too me it just seems that someone is just charging extra cause its a new car.

thanks,
i am gonna fight it
Only way to get this covered under warranty is to prove that the clutch has not been abused. Only way to do that is to take it apart.
If the clutch has been driven normally (as the OP states), it won't show any signs of abnormal wear and it will be covered under warranty.
If they take it apart and see it has been abused then either the OP isn't telling the whole truth, or the OP simply doesn't know how to drive that well.
Clutches can go quickly if you abuse them or are a bad driver. Plain and simple.
So, ask the dealer to open it up and take a look. You should look at it as well once they've got the clutch out. If they see signs of abuse, put in an ACT clutch and call it a day. If you don't see signs of abuse, ask them to replace it under warranty.

By the way, how many miles were on the car when you bought it? It could have been heavily abused by dealer staff or other consumers who took it out for a test beating before you purchased it.
wow not for nothing this car really has a stock weak clutch I smelled mine a couple of times just going up a hill, I'm no amateur My previous car was a sti i traded it in at 30,000 after a couple launches with no problems,

man i must have a super stock clutch on mine. i have just under 16k miles and i have launche it about 30 times and havent had a slipping clutch as a results of racing. i had the clutch slip on me once after my 3rd time and i had hot lapped it. after that she's been solid. the only complaint is that at times i hear a weird rubbing noise when downshifting.
Based on this, I would go to the dealer, and explain to them, there is no way this should have failed under 6k miles. Unless they have evidence to the contrary, you will be pursing this with the Better Business Bureau, and if necessary get a lawyer. Explain to them, you recognize this is a unique situation, however, with no mods, and with this being your 3rd manaul car, you should not be excluded from warrantied service.
If you approach them cordially, and explain to them you know of countless others with greater than 12k, and some with more, they should concede. However, I would do my homework, I would call the BOB, and have the name of a reputable lawyer.
I doubt they will push back, but you never know.

My clutch was always a stinker from the factory, any kind of power off the line would make it smell, a total STINKER!
I ended up getting my ACT at 4k miles so when I visited the local dealership they said they couldn't get it covered under warranty but helped me on the install for about $400 or half price. These clutch installs are a little more difficult for the mechanics mainly since very few have installed them so they are taking longer for them to complete. $600-$800 for an install would be a fair price plus cost of the new ACT clutch. If you know the dealership really well you could see if they would help you out some based on the fact that it was weak/defective from the factory. For comparison my Evo 8 stock clutch lasted 45k with similar power levels and similar driving habits.
If you are keeping the car stock (or just bolt ons) then the HDSS with street disk is likely your best bet. You may also consider a lightend flywheel while you are getting it torn into.

so if the clutch is bad how can u tell if the clutch has been abused?? it will obvisously shows signs of something hence why it's failing? i wouldnt think the clutch would look like new and still fail.

dude are you joking? Its an evo man not a formula 1 car. My evo was my first manual car ever and I sure as hell didnt blow my clutch in 6000 miles. Ive even launched that thing countless times and Im still good to go. Seriously its just an evo its not like how the carerra gt's lightweight carbon clutches go out in 6000 miles. I fail to see how an evo is so hard to drive
This happens all of the time, history repeats itself. These particular threads popping up now for the X are identical to the threads that popped up when the VIII first came out, and the same couple of tool bags liked to post sh*t like this, are you gonna be our new tool bag?
Think clutch going out before 6k is bad? The clutch on my car went out before the car even had 500 miles. No launching. No agressive driving or track time. Just everyday stuff. No it wasn't 'bad driving' (okay - maybe a little, i let my dad drive it and he hasn't driven a stick in 20 years). Every time the car would park, the clutch would stink really bad, even when we got it out of the dealership. I wanted to doubt the fact that there was something wrong with the 32,000$ car i just bought, but one day the old clutch just gives out and most of the dealerships in the houston area refused to replace it under warranty claiming that i had abused it, and it cost almost 2k(anyone know any good shops around houston?) to do so. I did try pretty much everything i could including threatening to sue and whatnot and they still wouldn't budge, and mitsu corporate even told me the same. The new stock clutch i have now has been abused much, much more and has never smelled or given me any problems after 5000 miles, even after autocross and a few launches. There *has* to be some kind of defect coming straight from the factory clutch with these cars, or the people that drove it before me mistreated it very badly before i bought it with 28 miles on it. Overall it cost all my money for mods to replace a defective clutch =(
Just like someone else pointed out, I traded in my 04 VIII with a brand new (<500 miles on it) Fidanza 3.2. I know the service tech at the dealer real well and he told me one test drive by an inexperienced driver fried the clutch. They had to replace it. Anything can happen.
