Tranny gone (manual)
My car had the same fault (thread on here)
I have been speaking to a few people, it seems there are a few opinions of how and why??
The original oil has been suspected...
Also manufacturing tolerance's possibly too tight on the diff, and as such under hard cornering, of full lock and full throttle theis is where the diff is working it's hardest.
It is the center diff which is failling and there is no concrete evidence just theories??
I have asked on my thread for anyone who has had a failure to please contact me with some details..... ( please see my thread for whats needed)
Thanks
Mark

I think I may have the same problem too. Sorry if Im jumping on the bandwagon. I thought I was just being paranoid until about an hour ago.
Backing out of the driveway (w/o the music playing like usual), I heard a scraping from under my driving position or behind i think. It sounded as if metal was barely scraping something. It almost tinny sounded but not high pitch. It happened when I engaged the clutch into reverse gear with almost no throttle (car revs high off cold start).
I've never personally checed the oil in the diffs myself before and where I live is a pain for this kind of thing. I need to find a jack and check I guess.
I also notice some sort of drivetrain whine around 4th 5th both around 3000 rpm or so. Its very faint and not sure if its the tires or not. After I read about this problem I noticed it and thought I was being paranoid.
The history of the car is:
-25000km
-winter driven for 12,000 KM
-no drifting and very little tirespin (ASC left on in winter)
-no dropping the clutch or HARD launches
-decent amount of corning but nothign abusive. i drive my corrolla similarly
-S-AWC pump failed first week of winter. Didnt get a fix for it until spring (they couldnt get any pumps).
-Slight notchyness in shifting (got better as time went on but not fixed) mostly in lower rpms
-the drive train seems to clunk during cold start into reverse. Audible engagment sound from the outside of the car (didnt think it was unusual for this car---noticed it on other evo x) (i dont mean the sound of linkages/gearbox)
-pops out of gear every so often usually out of 4th or 2nd
-locks out of reverse regularly (like most standards i think)
-Service more then required (every time i make it to the city)
-last service was the 'D' type for extreme use (all fluids changed) a month ago
-NOT used as a race car or really badly enough to warrant the D-type service (i just idle a lot and a lot of cold starts and highway/city driving)
If I find a hoist or a buddy and a jack I plan on taking a looks at this after getting a shop manual or a howto if it seems doable. Other then that Ill try to get Mitsu to look at it. But I would rather be safe they sorry and send it off to get strengthened rather then spend the $5g's for a new one.
To the OP, If this is threadjacking Ill edit and start a new one.

I, too, am also experiencing some minor whining. It's present at around 2000-3000 rpm's for basically all my gears, although i'm not sure whether it's just a normal part of the transmission. I've never owned an AWD vehicle so i'm not particularly knowledgeable of how differently it should sound, compared to FWD.

I'm totally fine with you guys chiming in. The more info we have on this problem and the reasons that are causing it the better.
Some whining is normal. But if you think it's not-like-it-was-before, then go and check it out.

Buschur has a kit of pins for the center diff that are stronger than OEM.
