Sspperformance is selling the blue one it's pretty cheap. You can do all those test but the only way to make sure is having a afr gauge. It's so hard to figure out your running lean on the 4b11 without a afr gauge. It's crazy that a 10 dollar part is causing all this problems.

But why isnt this happenning to bone stock cars all the cars that have this issue have mods and garentte that they have tunes on them.

Probably because the car runs so rich on stock tune that when it goes bad it doesn't really affect it. I could be wrong though. As far as the modded and tuned cars all I know is that GST is the shiznit and we don't have this problem out here thats documented in Norcal.

A lot of the cars through GST are E85 as well. I'll be getting gauges in my car as soon as it's back from the shop.

It is a relay... I doesn't matter if you are stock or tuned.. that makes no difference to how the relay works...

The problem comes when you are tuned and it goes bad, then you end up running leaner than you want. Like someone said above, you are already pig rich from the the factory, so an untuned car will not have such adverse affect if the relay fails.

If you took a completely stock car and pulled the relay you would be at 11.5 afr's vs 10 @ 7000rpm with boost quickly tapering to 12psi. Now take that exact same car and do anyone of these simple mods;
Test pipe - WGA or stock one tightened - MBC

Now your AFR's are suddenly in the 13's with IDC's @ 100% because your pump can't kick it up a gear. On a fully stock car it doesn't ever really need to.

We have seen datalogs of Evo X's during a failure along with boost, EGT and AFR and lean condition did not present itself in the datalog we had been sent to review.

I am sure that in some cases there is truly a handful of bad relays, however I also believe it is a scapegoat for a other failures.

That looks like what happened to my first engine almost 2 years ago.

Dealer replaced shortblock under warranty. Guess what? It's broken again, and sitting at the dealer. They are tearing apart the block now.

I'm too superstitious to provide any more details than that until I get my second motor replacement under warranty approved. Fail 1 ~8k mi, fail 2 ~16k mi.

Damn! So the weak points of the 4b11 are starting to show its ugly head.

1. center differential pins give out
2. rod bolts that loosen up
3. pistons that desintegrate

Thats just great. Now I have to save and plan to build my short block soon (w/ forged parts). This sucks! That money is supposed to go elsewhere..

That's what I was thinking, but I want a confirm.

He would make 2 confirmed stock piston-ring issues.


Also, MikeButler, what Fuel Pump Relay do you have? Have you ever checked it?

I am not convinced that just because his motor went down it was a piston ring's fault.
