Rattling on Deceleration/Coasting

Has any one figured out what causes a rattling noise when decelerating/ coasting? I’ve looked everywhere in the engine bay but couldn’t find anything.

sound will go away after the clutch is pressed down.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I’m looking for the ring and pinion to replace it.

do you happen to know of the Evo 9 fits the Evo x T Case?

As far as I know ring and pinion are different between evo 4-6, 7-9 and 10. If you are referring to swapping your transfer case with one from evo X then I think it's also not compatible taking into account that gearbox of X is different than 9 as stated here:

I have an Evo x. I tried looking for the gearset but I can’t find even the part number but I was looking at picture of an evo 9 gearset and they look identical to the Evo x.

try contacting sheptrans.com or maybe just ship the diff to them
have you opened the cover and inspected for wear? that could have large metal pieces in there waiting to get between the teeth and make more damage

Sorry for a little bit of a dig, but did you resolve this? Just developed seemingly identical symptoms after a track day
Thanks in advance!

yes sir, it was the transfer case. The ring and pinion gears were destroyed. Drain your transfer case fluid and check the fluid.

have fun removing it. I removed it on my back alone and it was not fun. There is a video on YouTube that shows how to remove it if you want to give it a go.

on the evo ix, I seperate it if it needed service. tail section, cover, LSD and the rest and assemble it in the car. its tricky to make the splines align but atleast its not heavy. i also remove just the cover if needing a new axle seal. I'm not sure how it is with the evox
i just reinstalled it (as one unit) last night after a clutch job and my joints are sore. had a good sleep tho

on the Evo x you can’t leave the section behind because there isn’t enough room. When removing it, if I remember correctly, you have to twist it to drop it down.
