maybe the "wheeze" is the rev limiter kicking in? I know my evo IX MR went up to 7500 rpm.

I agree, in a straight line it just isn't gonna be as fast as a IX. I guessimate a healthy model with a aggressive and capable driver should be around 4.9 to 5.1 Seconds to 60mph, 1/4 mile should be around 13.5 to 13.7 Seconds @ 99 to 101mph. The IX under the same scenerio is capable of 4.4 to 4.6 Seconds to 60mph, and the 1/4 mile in 13.0 to 13.2 Seconds @ 102 to 104mph. So there is no doubt that the IX in a straight line is a faster car, in fact the IX is perhaps one of the fastest production 4-cylinders in the world in a straight line.

I doubt this, it is not their first time driving EVOs, if that were the case, they would have made note of this, because that would be huge also. Could you imagine the rev limiter kicking in right at redline But I'm pretty sure that isn't the case at all, the car just isn't ready. I mean that isn't the only thing, the interior isn't still all worked out, the SST tranny is still getting the kinks worked out, WTF Mitsubishi the clock is ticking, hurry the f*ck up!!!

"an asthmatic engine that seemed to suffer respiratory attacks near redline, a symptom Mitsubishi says was most likely an engine-control gremlin that would be sorted by production."

The test drivers most likely had to shift early to stay in the powerband. This isn't good at all, I remember once I received bad advice to shift my EVO IX at 6500-6600RPM at my local 1/8th mile drag strip. I ran a 9.2@76mph, absolutely rubbish. My best stock time was 8.6@82mph w/ a 2.0 60ft. So the point is, it does make a difference.

I doubt you will see it break into the 4's for a 0-60 time. The JDM model didn't even hit 4's did it? It'll probably hit 13.8-13.9 and trap close to 100 for a quarter-mile time. Its sad either way you look at it. I mean, I know its a "tuner" car, but you shouldn't have to tune it just to make it as fast as an stock prior generation car.

Totally agree. I don't care about the marginal cost of such a mild mod but you have to throw away your drive train warranty to do it. That is unfortunate.

I said an aggressive and capable EVO owner, not magazine tests. Believe it or not, 13.4@102mph for a IX is quick, but many owners have gone faster. 13.8@100mph, is just horrible for a AWD vehicle. Even crappy to launch for a AWD vehicle Mazdaspeed 6s hit 13.8@97-98mph. So if the EVO X is hitting high 13s with near or at 100mph traps, something is wrong with launching the vehicle, and I guess the days of 1.7X 60fts on the stock clutch are over.

If I cared about looks, I wouldn't have bought a IX.

Would you guys agree (as far as stock performance)?
I < II < III > IV < V < VI > VII = VIII < IX > X

yea that sounds like a fair statement....as generations change, it takes a few years to gradually outperform the last

I<II<III<IV<V=VI>VII=VIII<IX>X therefore V=VI=IX!

That is the trend, but it shouldnt be that way - every generation should be better than the last...period. The X is an underpowered whale in comparison to the IX.
