A consumer who has pretty much zero awareness that a car called the Evo even exists. All the press is great, but their new consumer doesn't always pick up a car magazine and read the articles or browse this forum all day (like car geeks like me do ). The Evo X isn't getting much press in anything but online forums and car magazines. There may be other articles out there, but there aren't many. The trouble for Mitsu is going to be how do they reach their new consumer (PR can't do it all) and attract them to put the Evo X on their shopping list when they've already got BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Acura and Infiniti on their list. Mitsu has a big task ahead of them
^ True indeed
But if mitsu can't get the current VIII/IX owners to trade up to the X and build a loyal fan base, what makes them think the newcomers will buy the X? A lot of the other car company's have a loyal fan base that will trade up when a new model comes out, mitsu doesn't have that. It's going to be real hard to sway new customers to the X line in the 30K-40K market when established players rules that market already.

Previous EVO owners think way too highly of themselves.

If not one of you bought the X, Mitsu will still find homes for all of them. It's a limited production car and will attract a lot of new buyers who want a more refined car that doesn't feel like a tin can.

Evo owners are not loyal to Mitsu. Most Evo owners DON'T buy more Mitsu's. You buy $10,000 worth of aftermarket parts and line the pockets of other companies.

Mitsu clearly agrees with you given the way they are treating the performance crowd with this SST/Automatic only MR. Trouble is, those serious about performance (mods) won't buy it. That leaves the sport/luxury market to buy the MR which is the same group cross shopping Lexus, Audi and BMW. Pretty tough sell. Most of those buyers are posers who will be heavily discounting the Mitsu badge.

It gives 17 year olds an alternative to boring luxury brands. And they don't even have to learn how to drive stick to get it off the lot and into a curb!

I think it's a real stretch to put the Evo X MR in the 'sport/luxury' catagory just because it comes with a dual clutch auto tranny. By that definition you'd also have to include the new GTR, M3 SMG and every Ferrari sold since the 355.
The new X has been track tested against quite a few new comers (STi, Lexus IS-F, S2000CR, G37 Coupe) and other then that trouble making new STi, the X has laid waste to all comers. If that's your definition of a sport/luxury car then sign me up.

not really, seeing that the Evo X MR will be closer to $40k instead of say $35K, these 17 year olds will go out and by used Evo IX's which will be much cheaper and crash those instead.

That would be true if the majority of 17 and 18 year olds were buying Evos with their own money. But, the overwhelming majority are using mommy and daddy's rich pocketbooks. They've got plenty of money to afford more expensive cars, they just happen to choose the Evo. $40K isn't going to stop them when mommy and daddy are buying
