I've owned plenty of cars that were over 10 years that didn't have any rust on them and all of them had plenty of scratches and rock chips.
And yet you keep talking like the OP actually has rust spots. It's just typical of a VIII or IX owner to call out the X for a 'problem' that doesn't exist.

Pretty obvious that it's surface rust from rock chips. No dealer will cover that. Just gently sand them and apply touch up paint.

Simmer down son!!! I'm not calling out anyone, I'm just going by what the guy said. Perhaps those spots that he's talking about really aren't rust just like a few of you have been saying. I honestly hope so because I think that would be pretty crummy if they were. Even for the VIII and IX, I think it's kinda lame that a car that's only 6 or 7 years old would have issues with rust when I've seen cars twice as old that didn't. Like I said before, the rep. that I talked to even admitted to me that some manufacturers use a better primer that does a better job of preventing surface rust from forming. I can't personally speak for X owners cuz I'm not one, but for my VIII, it would have been nice if Mitsu would've done that. I just think that it's unfortunate ifX owners really are seeing rust already because Mitsu decided to continue to skimp on the paint process. I guess only time will tell us for sure.

LOL first of all I'm probably older than you so the son comment doesn't apply. 2nd of all this isn't a Mitsubishi problem it's a japanese problem due to thin water based paints they all use. Mitsubishi paint still isn't nearly as bad as Subaru's for example. This is a couple of 2008 WRX's. Subaru has had to do full repaints on a bunch of their cars. Note it's all surface rust due to the thin paint not providing proper protection.

Did the sideskirt always fit like that? It looks like the entire area with the chips/rust may have been scrubbed by something, or do other people's cars look like that, too?

^i think that problem is pretty common. Mine is doing that as well but not to that extent. It's covered under warranty and I think mitsuparts.net sells the clips for DIY-ers.

^ yes side skirt issues are very common with the aero package. The only anwser here is if something breaks your paint, small rock chip, damage, anything. GET SOMETHING ON IT RIGHT AWAY!!! The rust will only eat your car away when it has something to. All cars would rust when bare metal is exposed. Get some nail polish, touch up paint or something and just get something on there.

It remember reading somewhere mitsu put out a clear bra replacement for this particular area. It was a piece on the door side of the wheel well, a large piece of the rear doors, and about a 4-inch section of the side skirt in under the rear doors.

I wish I knew about this a year ago.

Oh well, I paid extra to clear bra the rear doors and rocker panels because of all the issues people had.

Any exposed unpainted metal on any car will rust if left untreated. Yes, that's rust, but it's from rock chips exposing bare metal. You'll get laughed at (as you should) if you claim on your warranty for that.

The rock chips are so annoying. Better off just saving and getting the entire car repainted. Which is totally lame
