Update: Getting Evo!!!Thinking about switching: STi to Evo X

I have 06 STI just ticked over 60k miles. Bought her back on August 2005 and loved every minute of it.

Here is my journal:
http://www.iwsti.com/forums/gd-membe...irst-post.html

It looks like my only choice is GSR model since I want manual but what are the main differences between GSR, SE and MR.

Also to the folk who were in my shoes are you glad you went to the darkside? Is clutch really big of an issue?Does it need to be changed every 10k? How are maintenance costs?

Please discuss pros and cons of owning an Evo.

Update2:
just got back from mitsu dealer, they are giving me great trade- in value for my car and willing to get any car I found on the internet that is within 450 miles.

My question is SE is $2k-3k cheaper. What do you guys think about paddle shifters? Is it really laggy like any other auto car?

I know I will be getting better suspension than GSR but the only think I dont want is the auto?

Please share ur thoughts because need to make decision until tomorrow.

Thanks

Update:
Thank you very much for everybody's input. I decided to keep the car, at least, until it is paid off (10 months)and then I will take it from there. At least I wouldnt owe anything on it when I will trade it in.

I appreciate everybody's input, opinions and experiences and thank you for keeping the thread clean with out turning it into a "EVOvsSTi which one is better?" thread.

Thanks
sti-06

I say do it because the power per money ratio is veeery good with evos and as for the clutch if u know how to drive u should be fine, the whole 10k miles lasting thing its just bs

GSR: 5 speed manual, 1-piece front rotors, Enkei wheels
MR: SST 6-speed transmission, 2-piece front rotors, BBS wheels, upgraded Recaro seats, and Bilstein shocks
SE (and someone may have to correct me on this): SST 6-speed transmission, 2-piece front rotors, BBS wheels, Bilstein shocks, and a lot of fancy-pants interior upgrades

There are a lot of other little differences but those are the big ones I could think of off the top of my head.

Like you, I was only interested in getting a manual transmission when I got my Evo X. My two co-workers both have MR's with the SST transmission and they are awesome to drive, I just like the feel of the Manual better. Not to mention I plan on upgrading to a relatively high WHP number and feel it will be easier and less expensive to put the power to the ground.

Maintenance will probably be similar or less than the STi as I believe the Evo X is easier to work on. I could be dead wrong on this though but seem to remember my mechanic cussing a lot more when I had an STi than he did after I got my Evo(s).

I have owned an 04 WRX, 05 STi, 06 Evo 9, and now a 2010 Evo X. I didn't miss my Sti at all when I got my Evo 9 and I really don't miss it now that I have my Evo X. I do miss my Evo 9 every once in a while though.

Since you are thinking about buying an Evo X I will exclude the pros of owning an Evo 8 or 9.

Evo X owning pros: Massive amounts of power to be made with simple bolt-ons, really stout motor/tranny/transfer case so far, stock handling is amazing compared to my STi and even Evo 9, pretty good low end torque.

Cons: Stock block is probably not quite as strong as an Evo 8 or 9 but still probably stronger than an STi. The transmission is probably not quite as strong as the STi. Heavier than I would like.

BTW - Nice STi. I have a lot of respect for those cars still and love the way they look and sound. I am a fan of the wingless look and have went with the Do-Luck trunk for my Evo X. Best of luck with your decision and welcome to the boards.

This man has summed it up perfectly. The main thing for me was being able to make more power for less money.

speaking of clutches, i have close to 45k miles fp red setup around 400whp/375wtrq, and still rocking the stock clutch
trick is...DONT bang on the gears, and easy when releasing the clutch!

Man, I am very pro-Evo and anti-STI, but looking at your journal, that Subie is very clean. If I had a car that nice and it was paid off, I would keep it for sure. Plus 60k is not that bad mileage at all.

I'd hang onto it for another 60k at least, if nothing else for financial purposes and the fact that there is not a thing wrong with it. Super nice ride!

had an 05 sti. my member journal on iwsti is still there under my old user name twisties.

the evo x is more refined, much better at handling, nicer day to day to drive and makes a lot more power for less.

i miss the midrange torque and the 6 speed, but that's about it.

still on the stock clutch here...nearing 30k with at least a stage 1 in power since 5k. don't launch and the stocker's fine.

They X make's power so easy, simple fact. The difficult thing for me to understand is why you where parking that little gem in an apartment complex? i had an apartment the first year i owned my VIII and id have people with "87 Buick, pull 2 inches from my door of my brand new EVO Which was the fist 30K+ car i've ever owned... maybe keep the Subie till you get into place with a garage.

Gosh this is going to end being another STI vs. Evo thread but perhaps I can give you bit of a different take than what's been said before (or maybe not):

First - Keep the 06 STI. I love them. The 05 and 06 STIs are fantastic. I've owned a few of the older WRXs, did the typical suspension and power mods, loved how raw and basic they felt, but still always wanted the STI's feel for it's diffs and transmission.

I've had my Evo 10 now for a month, after a 6 month search for an 05 or 06 STI with the plan to keep my 08 Mazdaspeed 3 as the daily. It only took a back to back test drive in a GR STI and the 10 to convince me to get it, despite the Evo's negatives (mainly the small trunk and 5 speed highway drone) and later plan to pick up a GD STI for project.

If you want a bit more refined and compliant ride, with some modern features (bluetooth phone, keyless entry, steering wheel controls, etc) then the Evo would be a great move, but you'll give up a bit of that tossable/flickable rawness of your 06 STI. the GD STI can be just as fun even though the Evo 10's performance and limits are higher.

Just for information purposes, I believe the SE only comes with the Enkei wheels from the GSR (not the BBS wheels)

Great explanation! Thanks a lot.

Appreciate the props for the STi.

As you said one of my other concern is the transmission of the Evo. I heard They are fragile compared to STi tranny. I understand that I can make more power cheaper but if I cant lay that on the ground due to transmission issues, that will be a useless power.

The only reason I brought clutch issue is that I know a local Evo owner changed his clutch 3 times within 30-40k miles.
