I have a 6 year old minivan in my driveway right now with paint bubbling under the edge of its hood. Salted roads are a horrible thing. Seems like the salting isn't as bad in your area.
Sorry,my point was.....some rust prevention(and that includes wash and wax)do help extend the life of a car as opposed to you saying that all are a waste of money and don't work. And my point for saying that was to give the orginal poster something to think about.

Once upon a time I use to park the "good" car and drive a winter beater to.....eventually I realized the good car would not turn to dust if I did a little prevention.

I never said anything about anyone in NY......yet.....but since you drive a van and its rusty after only 6 years.........

We have the worst salt/rust conditions in North America here.....the freeze one minute thaw the next means they dump thousands of tons of salt per year.Combined with the salt spray from the ocean=RUST.It might surprise you to find that companies such as GM often come here to test their cars in our climate.

Sorry Bud,never meant to insult you, only trying to take part in the forum.

To the OP:change the oil/filter,fill the tank with fuel, add some fuel stabilizer, leave the windows open a crack(assuming its in a dry spot),and try to start it and move it back and forth as much as possible.

(edit)PS if you wash and wax it make sure its dry before storing.......moisture/air is really what causes the chemical reaction of rust on metal.

1. <grin> I can't believe you're saying this to me of all people. You've never been to EvoM's detailing forum, have you? The gist of the matter is this: we all live in different parts of the world with different local conditions. If you like, come down to the detailing board sometime. We'd love to talk to you about your paint maintenance routine that prevents salt from lodging itself in the chassis.

2. When did I say that washing and waxing is a waste of money? Moi, of all people, who spends quite a bit of time helping folks take care of their paint on this very forum. Yup, you chose the right guy.

Really, I don't even know why you're going on with this. You claim to drive your cars in salt. Great. Looks like you live in a rural area. No one is telling you not to. Other folks feel differently about their possessions. Where is the problem?

FWIW, this is a GTI that I drove off the lot on May 17, 1991 and owned for 17 years driven though 15 salted winters. Looks great, doesn't it? What you don't see are the holes in the floorboards, the rust all over the body, the shift linkage the needs to be lubed every six months due to corrosion, and I'm just getting started. Yes, pics can look good on the Internet.

I'm not.

I already said I'm sorry to you and offered a light hearted joke to soften the mood.

I offered my only tips to the orginal poster to try and get back on topic.

That's a bizarre statement. What's the other 50%? Driving stock cars in the Winter makes some sense but if you have a lowered car for road course or a show car with $10k in shiny mods and carbon fiber then that really doesn't compute.

I have a $1k beater for this Winter.
