No, the US did not have a 2009 model. Cars usually start manufacturing around middle of previous year for next model year, sometimes earlier depending. We already have a 2012 VW EOS on the lot. It is a 2010, he is not lying.

Even though there was no 2009 model year for the US a dead simple way to verify the model year is to look at the VIN plate on the driver's side door compartment. On the frame right beside the seat it will have the VIN and the manufacture date. If the date is August 2009 - July 2010, then it is a 2010 model year car. Same applies for 2011's (August 2010 - July 2011).

Also 2010 SE's were manufactured late in the model year (June 2010-July 2010) but are still considered 2010s.

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure this is the best way, this isn't always the case. It's not even mid year yet and we've had a 2012 for a few weeks now. The best way to tell the model year is to look at the actual VIN. The 10th digit is the designation for the model year. 2010 will be an A, 2011 will be a B and so on. 2009 and prior will be a 9 for 2009, 8 for 2008 etc until you get to 2000 and then it's letters again, at the end of the alphabet, I believe 2000 is Y an 1999 is X and so on.

I believe the August-July cycle is used by Mitsubishi, other manufacturer's might have a different model year cycle.
