Yes there will be. Just put a drop in filter in thats what they are made for, people who cant afford to do it right. The entire point of putting an complete intake on it to get rid of that ribbed section on the inlet. You want to develop as much as a laminar flow prior to it entering the turbo. Yes you will increase air flow cause you have more open surface are to bring that air it but the flow will be turbulent and you will throw codes and get idle spiking. In the end you are going to do what you want to do an no amount of what anyone else is going to say will change your mind. Just be patient and save your money like a good boy and you will get greater power gains. Put a little money aside each weak.

Your obviously just a complete moron, we have told you everything you asked and more but it's not what you want to hear so you choose to ignore it.

If you want to "rig" a 50$ k&n filter to your stock intake and have mechanical problems just to satisfy your inner "rice" then go for it because obviously nothing we say is going to change it.

Again, a panel filter cost the same or cheaper than your little k&n filter and give you a better bang for your buck since you won't have any problems.

i dont think there would be any serious problem if i leave the front end on. Atleast no one was saying of any issues in that thread
This mod was done back in 2008 when the X was still a new platform, and there probably wasn't much in the way of aftermarket parts available at the time.

Personally, I think it would probably better to get something like the ETS (LINK) or AMS (LINK) intake system, that includes a heat shield. K&N and several other companies also make similar kits.

Just adding a cone filter will work, but your car will idle like crap without the heat shield.

And the OEM panel filter is fine up to a certain power level.. adding a drop-in replacement panel filter will not give you the same "sound" as a larger cone filter, if that's what you're looking for.

Anyway, good luck

WOOOOOOOOSH!!!!!!!! Cough cough (RICE)

Just bustin on yeah bud. I just like to see things done the right way, I am **** like that. It also probably cause I am engineer/perfectionist. Just be patient and save up. The cobb torbo inlet and the drop in would be perfect if you are trying to save a buck. If you want buy my AMS intake pm me. I want to upgrade to an ETS anyway.

thank you for the response AFD, very helpful. unlike the other two idiots that are looking to just bash someone.

i have read though that the idle problem was only in the 2008 x's. and it was fixed in 2010, and i have an 11'. i dont know the details though, thats just what i read.

Dunno. I think the issue is just caused by engine heat being pushed to the intake area by the fans. There really wouldn't be anything for Mitsu to fix in that aspect, since all 2008 to 2012 X's have the same enclosed intake system.. but I guess the different tunes on them could make a difference.

Personally, I'd run a heat shield just to be on the safe side. No sense spending money on an intake just to have it suck in warm air.

Anyway, there's more info about the idle issue & different heat shield options here..

Looks like one of the guys even had good results using a cardboard shield

thanks ive actually read those threads already. thats actually where i saw that the problem was fixed in the 2010 s in one of the posts. it seems as though the heatshield is the most ideal thing to do. thanks for all your help.

This idiot is has a degree in Aerospace engineering and works as a mechanicle engineer so I think I know a thing or two about fluids/aerodynamics and the adverse affects of turbulent flows on mechanical systems. I was't bashing I am just blunt and very honest. Way to be a douche and take our advice with a grain of salt. See you at a local meet bro

i think im still gonna go ahead and install the filter with the front end of the airbox still on. and if i run into idle problems i ll just go back to original. its a 10 minute job. or i ll get a heat shield

I wonder how some people acquire these cars, and then I feel bad for the car.

if you're not going to do a full intake, the OE design is actually not bad at all. Just do a drop in filter and save the headaches
