Oil level going up?
Oil level going up?
So I was checking engine oil today and was surprise it went pass the "high" mark. This was even a few minutes when I got home. Last oil change I did was 3-4 months ago and I'm pretty sure I didn't fill it up that much. My question what would cause it to up? Could it be the fuel going in is unburn and ending up in the oil? It does smell like gas when I pull the dipstick out. Anybody have this problem?
When i change the oil I just put it a little under the full line because I know it will go up.That way it will also help the car not to leak.

You might be pushing coolant into the oil? Might want to make sure that is not happening. Aka, check your headgasket. You can also send oil for analysis when its time to see if its coolant or fuel dilution.
If it's just barely above where you filled it to during the oil change don't worry, there is nothing wrong, it probably just wasn't fully drained into the oil pan when you checked it after pouring oil in.
I'm keeping an eye on it when I change my oil tomorrow. What's the correct way to fill and check the oil? When I fill it up during an oil change it's the right amount but when I let the car run and check the level again I'll have to cap it off. Would that be the reason why I'm over filling?

The dipstick is designed to be checked when the engine is at operating temperature and checked after 30 seconds - 1 minute when turned off. If you do an oil change, add oil and check on a cold engine then your level is off.
Always fill 1/2 qt less, warm up. check level and add accordingly.

If you change the filter with the oil( recommended) the car needs to be started and left running for 15- 30 seconds for the oil to circulate and pass through the filter. Shut it off and check the level. If u put 5qts in it will be overfilled. Ive done oil changes on evo 8,9, 10 and ralliarts and they all read overfilled at 5qts
