Evo X Engine blown a week after buying it
this really sucks, i bought my evo used with similar mods now has 105xxx . runs great without a tune but i dont beat on her at all.. not saying you did, but wish you the best of luck. dont lose hope on your evo
A few questions to the OP....
1. What grade of gasoline was put into the car: 93 , 89 or 87?
2. Did you have a wide band o2 sensor installed in the car/or was there one in the car when you bought it since you knew up front it was modified?
3. Did you get an oil change or any service records from the dealership proving they serviced the car for use before releasing it to you? Or did you buy the car & simply just drive around for a week without even checking the dipstick?
4. Did you do any research into the history of the car? Carfax/Autocheck?

Only reason I said to lie is so to help keep his out of pocket to a minimum. If he has to contact a lawyer and get one involved its going to cost money. If the OP feels a tune is too expensive, how do you think he is going to feel about lawyer fees? Doesn't really sound like he has a ton of extra $ around. If I thought it was his fault I would say bite the bullet and buy a new engine.

I did not know about any wide band o2 sensor. If it was installed I did not know about it
I did get paperwork, I had a carfax. It showed that the car was serviced a few months prior, and had a oil change. I did not check the dipstick, but it did have plenty of oil because it was all over the road and engine when it blew.
Hope I'm not thread hijacking but I bought a brand new Evo x that only had about 62 miles but I've added a tomei catback and a k&n intake and I don't have a tune (yet). Now I have about 7500 miles.
Is this combo the type of thing that will cause my engine to eventually blow? I use 93 octane. I have been noticing my exhaust smells different almost like burning and I checked the dipstick yesterday and the oil is pretty dirty and I had it changed at the dealer not too long ago.
I live near Kansas City and their is a place called modified by Kc which tunes Evos but I was recently told by a local dealer that was selling a Mod'd Evo VIII to not use them.
Before I added these mods I talked to the head mechanic at my Mitsubishi dealership what I could do that wouldn't void my warranty and he said cat back and intake. He said a Tune would void my warranty.
Hearing these types of stories worries me.

haha, hey at least he didn't come on here and say "I was full throttle in 3rd at 100mph and my engine blew", and I told him to say he was cruising at 70 in 5th.
Little white lie he can back up by actually talking to a lawyer is not the end of the world. If your wife asks you if those jeans make her look fat, and they do...what do you tell her?
I am definitely not trying to convince you that I am a saint, cause that is never going to happen, nor am I.

The OPs problem comes from the previous owner. There is no telling what other mods the car originally had. If I had to guess, there was prolly a lot more and the things was worn out and he prolly got some cheap tune from a crappy tuner. An engine just blowing up is more of a Subi thing.

And as far as the oil goes.. Black is normal. You can't really go by color in any turbo'd car. The oil gets dark super quick. Just make sure and keep religious intervals.
Two comments. First, last time I checked, telling your wife that her jeans don't make her look fat isn't fraud. Second, I love people (including and especially people who work for a car dealership) who say that X mod will "void your warranty" as if the warranty were a holistic and all-or-nothing thing. Oddly enough, my slim wife in her tight jeans ("I swear, honey") seems to know more about Magnuson-Moss than people who are paid to know about it. Maybe we should buy certain Mitsu techs some skinny jeans to balance it all out.
Reading stories like this reminds me why I didn't buy a used evo. I understand money is always an issue but unfortunately these cars are beat on and modified improperly yet still expected to be just as reliable as a stock car. Hopefully everything works out for you in the end and either the dealer or Vehicle One takes care of it. You really don't want to have to go to court, it will probably cost more money to fight it then to just fix it if it turns out your SOL. Both the dealership and Warranty company have very deep pockets.
It sucks, I have been burnt before on a used car, thats how come I buy new.
worst case small claims court, usually up to 5k in damages.
Burden of proof will be on them, you just document all the events related to the problem.
I know thats not gonna cover all the damage, but if you have to pay out of pocket have a reputable tuning shop do the build.
May as well upgrade if you are gonna spend the cash.
you may end up better than when you started.
Good luck, my last car motor blew.
It was under warranty.
