Evo X Engine blown a week after buying it
Happened to me last night
.
i owned my car for 1 year and 7 months, it got moded and tune for a year now, and it got 6k miles only, i was cruising on the highway in 5th gear at 55mph and suddenly i felt the car shaking and (Low oil Pressure) light came on, i heard someone honking, when i looked thru the rear view mirror i saw a white smoke screen, i turned off the engine and parked on the road side, called a tow truck and took it to my friends shop.
He did a visual check to see any oil leeking somewhere or if the exhuast was dripping oil and there was nothing, so we started to open up the spark plugs starting from piston #4 (passenger side) it was fine, piston #3 was fine, piston #2 was fine, piston #1 got oil all over the spark plug, and the spark plug had a slight damage, so he took a probe camera and checked the pistons, all pistons were fine except for piston #1 which had oil and maybe some chipped metal (which we couldn't see due oil reflecting light into the probe cam), he looked at me and said you're the 3rd case i had, same problem with same piston, then he smiled and said (i guess your 2.2l engine is coming sooner than you thought).
I'm waiting for him to open up the heads and see what exactly happened, i might get full head job (valves, springs, retainers, porting) and new pistons and con. rods since we're opening it anyways.
But it's been an entire year on the same mods, same tune, just last night it decided to blow up for no damn reason

I'm in Louisville too. You need to seek out Adam Blevins for your tune. He lives in New Albany. Probably the best in the country. Www.abmods.com is where you'll find his contact info.
Motor blowing while cruising seems odd to me. Even if it was running lean I would think that it would start to buck and act funny first. Not just snap a rod out of the blue on no real load.
All seems weird to me. Not saying anyone is lying, I'm sure this is all true, still weird though. And without really knowing the cause it's kinda sketchy to just rebuild the motor and move on. Might go another few thousand miles just to have the same thing happen again.
Anyone figure out the cause of death yet?

sorry this happened to you.
seems like that the car was already damaged to the point about to blow when you bought it.
then you bought it.
and it had a misfortune.
i feel so bad for you.
time to fork out money for a rebuild.
the 4b11 is a really sensitive engine.

Hmm these cruise blow outs could it be that a person is in 5th gear, and do a part throttle acceleration to pass people , and during that time period TQ shoots off the roof causing the damage to the engine.
If we compiled the data, I think we could find the issue to be that after a car is tuned , the car has all of this extra tq that the original map didn't have. And uncessary load is put to the engine.
Maybe this issue could me remedied detuning the car at higher gear ratios and specific load values.
This is pure speculation, maybe some tuners can chime in.

[QUOTE=sstevojr;10534163]OP, don't know how to say this w/o sounding like an A-hole (I'm not doing it on purpose) but it's VERY clear you have no clue what you are talking about. These cars are not for you.
The Internet told you it was safe? Well the Internet also says the world ends in 3 weeks, sooooo.....
EvoRush24,
I want to start out by saying, "I'm really sorry for your misfortune". I TOO don't want to sound like an A$$hole but I need to say this, not only for you, but for the other guys/gals who may be in the market for an Evo or thinking about modding their current Evo.
I feel sad when reading stories like this, but it also makes me angry at the same time. EVERY time I read posts on these forums about modding, I've got to chime in and try to talk sense into some people. As others know from my previous posts, I'm not ANTI-modding but I am for modding correctly. Too late for you but for others, here are some tips:
1. DON'T mod your Evos at ALL while the warranty is still good. Enjoy the car stock for a few years or at least until you hit 60K OR have the car paid off.
2. If you MUST mod, try to make sure one of the following things are present:
2a. You have a good bit of money available to not only buy quality parts, but to have them installed/tuned PROPERLY.
2b. You or a close friend has a very good bit of mechanical expertise so if something goes wrong, you can diagonose and fix the problem yourself.
If you don't meet the criteria for 2a or 2b, DON'T mod your CAR ! ! !
I was able to find a bone stock 2010 Evo GSR and after 5 months of ownership, it's STILL bone stock. I plan to keep it that way until it's paid off. I just get so annoyed at how many Evos you see for sale at dealerships or on sites like Cars.com that have low mileage and TONS of mods. Too many people buy these cars, think they're Paul Walker or Vin Diesel, spend all their $$$ modding the sh*t out of them while they can barely afford the $500-$600/month payment+insurance, and then get raped when selling or trading it in to a dealership. They skimp on cheap mods to save a few hundred bucks and then that few $100 ends up costing them THOUSANDS down the road in repairs.
To all you potential modders out there. Please think about what you're doing before heading down the modding path and if you do, please make sure you do your homework on which tuners in your area are legit. If you really want to have it done correctly, driving 3 hours away, dropping your car off at a reputable tuner while you get a hotel room overnight, or something along those lines is a SMALL price to pay for getting quality service you know is done right and will last.

^+1...Good advise and good warnings, however it is sad to see that the vehicle was purchased with the following modifications and then it tragically bit the bullet. The dealership should have honored a warranty claim as the vehicle was not touched after purchase. Its a tragic story with a tragic ending.
