Intake Question

Hey guys, so I'm looking to get an AMS intake. I was just wondering what everyones thoughts were on getting the Performance Intake that still sits up in the engine bay vs. getting the Performance Cold Air Intake that routes the filter behind the left front bumper. I guess I'm wondering if the Cold Air Intake is worth the extra $200?

Your question is based on a false premise. The OE intake is a cold-air intake. It doesn't get air from the engine bay; it gets it from the nose of the car. Almost any replacement intake for our cars will be less of a cold-air intake than stock.

From what I've read on this site an intake isn't even worth the money unless you really want to hear your BOV or you are pushing more power with an aftermarket turbo.

Correct me if I'm wrong but your money might be better off spent on other items.

Yes. So my previous post is a bit of an over-statement. I should have said that any intake that is noticeably different from stock and is promoted as being a cold-air intake is probably less of a cold-air intake than stock. Or maybe I should just say that no cold-air intake can be more of a cold-air intake than stock since the OE intake is a cold-air intake.

Or maybe I should (metaphorically) just shut up. Your call.

ps. please don't actually call; it's just a saying

Thanks, I knew the OE intake was cold air I just wasn't sure if the airbox style was as "capable" performance wise. From what I've read on the Cobb AP Stage 1 OTS map, it is meant to have an aftermarket intake installed, but could be used on stock cars as well. I'm new to upgrading and tuning and am just looking to maximize the performance of the parts I buy. I really appreciate your guys input.

The intake on our cars is a very popular thread maker on a lot of forums .
I have 460bhp with the stock intake, just another dropin filter from cosworth.
So I say spend your $$$ on other things, cams, tbe, ic, ic piping, fuel pump and a tune.

Wow, that is impressive, I've had a K&N drop in filter for a little over a year now. I'm glad I can put that few hundred bucks towards something else. This leads me to my next question, I have seen a lot of people saying that TBE is the way to go, however when I bought my car it came with a 5yr 100,000 miles extended warranty. With a TBE will my warranty for everything else be thrown out or just for the exhaust parts?

That's also a beat to death question .
I guess that most dealership will claim that it will void your warranty for everything, maybe a catback system won't, I don't really know since I've broken my warranty a loooong time ago :P. You will absolutely not get a warranty from Mitsu on the aftermarkets part that you install, that I'm 100% sure of.

But installing TBE and even more parts will require a tune and I think that a tune will absolutely break your warranty.

To get the right answer call your dealership and ask.

I LOVE my ams CAI. Performance wise it makes no difference, then again performance wise the normal intake doesn't make any difference over a panel filter either.

but the intake does go "WHOOOSSHHHHH" and besides, in behind the foglight makes a ton of sense for an intake. it's just harder to get at to clean the filter.

But if you want the AMS intake, then go for the full CAI, it's soo worth it for the noise, which sounds just awesomely badass.

Yeah I guess at this point I don't really care, I've had the car for over two years now and I can't resist the itch to start modding it lol

Ah, that's a different issue (from the temp of the air / where the air is being fetched from). The reason that a new tune is often needed when you change the intake is that changes to the tube into which the MAF sits can change the reading of air-flow. There's a thread somewhere that reports the differences in air-flow reading for a variety of popular intakes. IIRC, one of the cheapest comes the closest to the stock reading.

Yeah I was only planning on getting an intake because I was under the impression it was best to have one for Stage 1.

As mentioned above, minor bolt-ons (e.g., any vendor's "Stage 1") do not call for a new intake. A good drop-in will take you far and beyond what you have planned. As also mentioned above, new intakes are one of the things that owners of Evo Xs waste money on. If you want the car to make more noises, OK, but for actual performance, after a drop-in, leave the intake alone. The only exception to this is a smoother flexible tube between the metal tube that holds the MAF and the inlet to the turbo. Less turbulence in the air as it enters the turbo is good.
